I have a 1986 ford F 350 5.8 with duel gas tanks. I think my fuel selector valve has gone bad, add to this that my rear tank has not worked in years and I am wondering if I can just bypass the valve and go straight from tank to mechanical pump on engine?

Yes. Jus abandon the rear tank and lines

 

Thank you for you're reply. That's what I had in mind, but some times I get lucky. I went under there and found a broken wire.
