The VIN game

Compare the VIN on the Warranty Plate with the VIN on the registration to see if they match.
People replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99% of the time, they did not install the original Warranty Plate on the replaced door.
If the VIN's match: The engine's been swapped. The dual master cylinder isn't original either.

Okay, so I took your advice and checked the VIN listed on the title and it doesn't match whatsoever. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even seem to match how the VIN is laid out. MN title, VIN listed 40W027033. Is the also supposed to be located somewhere else on the vehicle? I checked the glove box and on the passenger side frame rail right behind the rad, but no luck.

the vin on the frame is there somewhere. you might need to get in there and really clean. The door looks red to match under the hood but you can tell the rivets in the vin tag were drilled out at one time, so maybe the vin tag was changed and the door might be original. Lets hope at least the frame #s match the title or you might be contacting the guy that sold you the truck....

Very true. If the frame and title don't match you have an illegal vehicle. This can bite you hard under the right circumstances and state.

It's a state of MN issued VIN. Whether MN stamped it elsewhere, you'll have to look for it, or contact the MN DMV, ask what their procedure is.

At one time, there was most likely a metal tag on the door with that MN VIN stamped on it. The door was later damaged, replaced by a used door.
Thefts: Some thieves ground off the hidden VIN on the frame rail (prolly why you can't find it). When the vehicle was recovered, a new VIN had to be issued.
Salvage: One circumstance I'm aware of is: In 1967, a barge load of new Mustangs sank in the Mississippi River. Ralph Williams Ford in Encino CA (the worlds largest selling Ford Dealer back then) bought all of them.
They all had to be inspected, then retitled with new VIN's issued by the CHP (California Highway Patrol). The cars were repaired and sold as used cars, but...
AFAIK ... none of the buyers were informed they just bought a used sunken Mustang, many came back to the dealership complaining of a foul odor.
So, your truck could have been in a flood, or in a a fire and etc. The insurance company settled the claim, the truck was either then sold back to the owner, sold at an auction...or to a wrecking yard.
But whatever occurred, MN had to issue a new VIN for it.
