1993 into 1990 swap

I have a 1990 F-350 with a 7.3 idi, manual transmission. The engine blew up. I also have a 1993 f-250 with the same 7.3 idi, but an automatic transmission. I would like to swap the engine only from the 1993 to the 1990, and keep the manual transmission. Seems like a pretty simple project, since I have all of the parts from both trucks, but I was just told that the crank may be different and the flywheel may not bolt up from the automatic engine to the standard tranmission configuration. Does anyone have any idea if this is so? ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Everything will bolt straight up, you will have to use the flywheel from the 90 model.

Man, what a relief! Do you suggest I check or do anything while the engine is out? Thanks.

Dude, it's a long story, but here goes. I bought the truck from a friend, for $800.00. The engine was tapping from the time I bought it, and my friend did not hide it from me, but the oil pressure, and gauges all stayed within normal ranges, and the truck ran fine. He purchased the truck from a horse hauler, and it was a part of a fleet, along with fleet maintanance. The truck had at least 3 or 4 hundred thousand miles on it, when I bought it. I drove the truck for about a year or so, like it was, in the mean time, taking it every diesel mechanic I knew. No one could find the solution to the problem. All saying if it is in the engine, just run it till it gives way, because it would be too expensive to fix. I probably put another 40 or 50 thousand miles on it during that time, and kept up with scheduled maintenance. One day, I had enough of the tapping. Being a policeman, I was detemined to find out what the problem was, also being a policeman, I have very basic mechanical knowledge. I found the line from the fuel filter was tapping with the engine, and you could feel it, when you touched it. I later found the fuel pump bolt was loose. After tightening them, the truck ran like it was brand new. I drove it for about another week, and then all hell broke loose. Two moderate sized holes apeared where the oilpan and the block bolt up. I hope I did not bore you with that story, but there it is.

The motor with the auto tranny will have a spacer between the crank and the flexplate that needs to be removed before installing the flywheel and clutch assembley for the manual tranny. The spacer should pop off when the flexpate is removed.

Won't he need a pilot bushing/bearing for the new motor? I've not done one of these yet, but I'm assuming that part is the same as a gasser.

Yep, but if I remember right it is actually in the flywheel instead of in the crank, like a gasser.

At the top of the page on the left is the button to start a new thread.
On the other side of the page is a search button, but I have never had much luck with it.
