1965 Mercury F250 Warranty Tag VIN number questions Help

Hi Guys,

I am new to FTE as I just purchased my 1965 mercury f250 and I am looking for some serial number/vin help.

I have the ownership for the truck and it is registered in my name but I am missing the door VIN tag, the previous owner is looking for it. Not sure if he will find it so I want to at least have the frame VIN as backup.

So I am trying to verify chassis and engine block numbers. Does the number on the frame match the door vin exactly and the how many numbers in the engine block number match the vin number? I understand the frame number should be passenger side top of frame under cab and ahead of engine cross member. I have sanded some areas off but no luck yet.

My truck vin is 1992528L 231506. What should the engine block serial number be if there is one? And am I looking in the right area for the numbers on the frame?

Could sure use some advice here.

Thanks
Wes

mercurypickups.com may have the info where the hidden VIN is stamped. It may be in a different location than on US trucks.

US vehicles use different VIN's than were used on Canadian vehicles thru 1965. 1966/68 Canadian trucks use the same 11 digit VIN as US trucks.

1992528L-231506B

1 = I-6 engine (the Canadian Warranty Plate has the size of the engine marked on it).

99 = Styleside Pickup.

25 = 250 series.

28 = 128.8" (refered to as a 129") wheelbase.

L = Left Hand Drive.

231506 = 1965 Canadian Numerical Sequence of Assembly (the trucks specific serial number).

B = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating range: 6,100-10,000 lbs.

There are no VIN's stamped on engines (or other mechanical parts). Numbers matching is a GM thing.

Thanks for the info NumberDummy. I did miss the "B" on the end.

I will check out the mercury website as well.

inre to the COLOR code noted in your other thread. Without the Warranty Plate, it's impossible to know if Merc's used the same colors (and codes) as US trucks.

Some colors used on Canadian trucks were different than US trucks.

I would have responded much sooner to your questions, but was on vacation 7/21-8/7.

Actually, "She, who must be obeyed" went on vacation. I've been on vacation since August 1997!

@ Builder X - I have a 65 Merc 250 as well, which I bought a year ago in BC - still 'discovering' a few things, but love the truck! If you are looking for engine information, you should also check out the foundry numbers on the engine itself. They can be found on the passenger side of the engine block, close to the firewall (so about as close to the bottom of the engine and as far from the front as is possible to see from above). The numbers should be something like C5TE-xxxx-xx. They can be hard to see so if there's oil or grease on that part of the engine, try to clean it off. I eventually just stuck my camera down there and snapped a few photos! Others can confirm this, but if your engine number starts with a C, then it's a 1960's engine, the next number tells you the year I believe (so C5 would be 1965)- the rest is info about the foundry's records, etc., has nothing to do with matching numbers to the truck. I thank NumberDummy for this help in identifying my own engine.
As a fellow Canadian Merc owner, we should keep in touch - I'd love to see more photos of your truck, whatever the condition, and anything else you'd like to share about it. They are great old trucks - is yours on the road?

San Juan Island WA, at the end of Cattle Point Rd., there's a 1965 Mercury Sahara Beige 8' Styleside parked at a residence.
