A "good" shade-tree mechanic......never heard of such a thing....

Are we talking about the whole core support? That pretty much requires removing the entire front clip.

I think he means himself, and good mechanics take whichever time is neccesary to do a job right.

Yeah, you don't know exactly what kind of unforeseen obstacles you'll encounter. I'd say its prolly close to a weekend project for the average guy. Unless you work super long hours and run into no problems, then its a days job.

He is doing a big body job for me which includes replacing BOTH FRONT FENDERS.

So I guess headlights and radiator, pulling/cutting out old one and replacing with one I'll hunt up at Crazy Rays this weekend. I pulled a fender off 2 different Broncos a couple weeks ago so, hopefully they are 1)still there 2)they have/had a 5.0 and 3)are in decent shape ($40). A new aftermarket is about $250 to $300 ... yikes. I checked a couple other yards and got one as low as $100 pulled ... if they have one. Other yards wanted $125 and $150. I'll probably do it myself (CR's) and save the money, he said I need a new OIL PAN too (rusting out) so that's easy and only $20. There should be a good one of those on the truck I pulled a bed off (very clean) but got to make sure it's a 5.0.

Maybe Santa will bring me a good cordless impact driver and sawzall, make this kind of ***** so much easier.

Honestly I cant see it taking more then a couple of hours to take the old one out, and put a different one back in.

I found it pretty easy when I removed both rad supports from my parts trucks, I doubt it took me half an hour to remove each of them.

351w's use the same configuration also....Just tryin' to expand your prospects....(As far as the support goes...Heck, any engine will have the same support..)

As for the oil pan, a quick part # search will tell if its the same, and if so....That is that many more trucks, to choose from...

Ain't me babe ...

no, no it ain't me. I'm paying the guy and he let me know it wasn't included in his price and is leaving it up to my generosity. I just was looking for a fair estimate of TIME to get a rusty support out in such away not to screw up the stuff that needs to be hooked up again, put a new one in and put it all together again. He has a lot of tools so that won't be a problem. So what is a FAIR estimate of time ? 4, 6, 8 hours ?

thanks

Just wondering guys....I'm needing to do this soon....ANd mine is actually not BAD, just is rusted around the actual mount....

So which would be easier/better...Pricewise...

Swap a full support out, or remove mine, cut/weld new metal in, and coat it...?

Then add new bushings, etc....

I'm thinking option #2....

I did mine in my 94 in less than 4 hours. You do NOT need to remove the fenders.

Just the grill, turn w bezels , header panel,(Bumper makes it easier but not necessary), unbolt rad and a/c condensor and let hang.

Now would be a good time to replace the rad support busings and hardware

The fenders are being replaced anyways, that's got to make it easier

Can you point me to support bushings and hardware ?

thanks

$250 !?! You trying to give me a heart attack ? Nah, I found that new one on EBAY $175 to my door though. I'm going to try something. I'm going to go back to that guy who quoted me $100 pulled and see if he'll throw in the oil pan too. Why not ?

I had my shop put in a new one for me that I bought in the spring off of eBay for around $150 shipped (brand new) and spent about another $100 for all of the bushings and bolts, etc. Even with power tools and everything, it took them about 4 hours to replace my old rusted out support.
