Thick front gears are common, he claimed he had a thick REAR 4:56 gear that bolted to the stock carrier.

I know I'm a tad late, but if its a toy only get some 5.13s or 5.38s......

I ran 5.13s with 35 back in the day, LOVED it!

If I pay full price it's 5:38s all the way, carriers and all. if I didn't miss the auctions i coulda got the 4:10s or 4:56s for around $150 I bet. I found a 4:10 rear for $75 on craigslist, but I'm gonna call some yards and see what's around.

anything lower than 4.10 in a junkyard will be a needle in a haystack.

as several have mentioned...dont waste your time with 4.10s for a toy with 37" tires

If finances allow it, I may go back to my original plan of leaving the 3:54s in it and just buying a doubler unit. I still have the rangebox off the old np203. Problem is the kits haven't got much cheaper over the years. Then I could still have highway gears along with some decent crawling gears. Not great crawling gears, but decent.

Look into Jeds Machine. Last I saw kit was right about 500$

If you run a auto, his resplined shaft will be fine. I beat on mine for years, n when I checked it last week shaft showed no signs of twist.

4.88 or deeper. 4.10's work well with a 31in tire and your transmission will hate you for it

Why would your trans hate you for the lower gears? I would think the gear reduction would be easier on it

He's saying in a 4.10/37" combo your trans will hate you.

Lower gears do take quite a bit of strain off an automatic transmission. It take far more power to get you up to speed than keep you at speed.

If you're gonna drive it a lot on the road 4.10......50/50 road/off-road 4.56.....100% off-road 5.13.
Another consideration....if you're goin' off-road on some tuff trails.....lockers front and rear are a must....if not....get a good winch!

Ford Dana 60's front and rear 5.13/Detroit Lockers.....Atlas T-Case...Chevy TPI...SM465......

Matter of preference.......I prefer 4 wheel drive..rather than 1 in the front and 1 in the back. Seen too many want-to-be wheelers hopelessly stuck in a place I can idle through.

A front locker can make steering impossible........It would be nicer to have it selectable in the front axle.......like an ARB or an Ox Locker.....best of both worlds
