exhaust brake
Is it possible to take an exhaust brake from a 2000 Ford and put it on my 94 idi? Not sure how it works without hooking up to the ecu. Are there any draw backs to putting a brake on? The brake is the kind that goes in the pipe farther down from the turbo

Shoot, with my 30 ft goose neck loaded my but has puckered numerous times. Not a great feeling when the trailer is pushing the truck with the front wheels skipping

the compression on our trucks is too high for exhaust brake to work properly without doing damage.

Has anyone ever tried one, I know one was designed for these trucks, but never knew anyone that tried one. What is going to be damaged.
I have never felt like the turbo on anything acts anything like an exhaust brake.

I think what I heard was that the backpressure would start to lift the valves off their seats. I don't know if upgrading the valve springs would make it possible?

I don't know, but the manufacturer that builds them used to be a member here, and said they were no problem. They do not stop the exhaust, just restrict it, They are also built with different amounts of back pressure, for different engines, so a little research would be in order before I would use one for a stroke. The only reason I haven't tried one on an idi is the initial cost of a new one.

i looked into one many years ago when i towed eery day, and i was told the exhaust brake would raise the compression ratio to levels that could blow head gaskets, stretch head bolts, and crack rings.
that was enough for me to decide it was not worth it.

You're kidding me right?
Number 1: you're way over loaded, and under equipped to handle it, and a compression brake is not going to fix your issues.
Number 2: get trailer brakes, not an exhaust brake.
and yes, you can put an exhaust brake on the truck with upgraded valve springs. Thats the WRONG way to fix your issues, do it right.
You need upgraded valve springs, and even still, its not going to get much better than what you already have with that stock baby turbo chopping up the air.

I'm curious as to where that info is at, and was there some examples of it. I know there are different springs in different models, to avoid any problems like this.
I have never known anyone that tried one on an idi though.

I go down icy hills all the time when a compression brake is way better than brakes to use, you don't have to be overloaded to slide your wheels.

here in Maine the law states that any trailer rated for 3k or more needs brakes.i recently started to check out a few used trailers and was floored by what im seeing.scary stuff out there on the road.obviously the law needs to be enforced better about trailer brakes here.
being too poor to add some brakes is no excuse to risk lives either.i mean some of these trailers where guys towing heavy tractors.stupid.

A couple weeks ago I pulled a trailer that the brakes were working toooo good, (I hate electric brakes lol) The pickup brakes would not even be starting to work, before the trailer brakes would lock up, so I had to out run it to the bottom of the hill, when I got to the bottom of the second hill, I stopped and unplugged the trailer so I could be safe. lol
