First start in 2 years... What should I do?
Hey guys I've just about finished replacing my oil cooler gaskets in the truck that I recently bought 91 f250, and it hasn't been started in one or two years. What are some things that I should be checking, doing, or replacing before I start this truck. I was planning on turning it over using a breaker bar at first to save the starter some work. And then running it for 15 minutes or so then changing the oil since I'm sure a lot of stuff is going to get trapped in that oil really quickly.
But other than that this is my first time owning/working on a diesel so any input no matter how small is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I would hit the starter and see if she fires off, you might just be suprised, I left a 91 sitting for a couple years, and she fired off on one battery, with a set of cables hooked to another rig. Worm it up and change oil and the fuel filters.
This does kinda depend on what type of climate you live in. I have seen fuel get an algae growth in it, then the whole fuel system needs cleaned.

I would definitely get some biocide into the tanks and change the fuel filter before firing it up. Check the filter for mucous like sludge. Then change the filter again after a couple of hundred miles

I parked my 88 7.3 in Jan of 2006, put some bio. in both tanks.I was keeping it for my Grandson, he came home from Iraq in Sept, we put in two new batteries and it fired right up. then we drove it some and the checked the glow plugs 3 were bad.. it still has 3 of the original GP.
There is one problem, the front fuel tank was full, he has driven it for a few miles, the fuel gage is stuck at over full.
what should be done with this...????

I'm with Starmilt..........crank it over and see what you get.... 20 second cranking with 2 minute cool down for the starter. Once you have it running warm it up and replace the fuel filter..... fill the filter with Diesel clean, Hayes diesel treat or any other reputable additive... or fresh diesel.
You can do the oil after a good warm up and short run....
As for the oil cooler keep a check on the coolant for engine oil....... did you change just the gaskets or the orings too.......

These things are pretty amazing. I left mine sitting for almost 2 years and she fired right up. The O-rings and return lines had dried out and started leaking, but after replacing them everything was just fine. I don't think algae in the fuel is much of a problem any more. The sulfur content used to allow this, but the new ULSD fuel is not a problem.
