1951 F1 Parking Brake Question

1951 F1 Parking Brake Question
Hello all, I am going to completely replace all of my parking brake cables and as much of the hardware that I can find. I think I remember reading somewhere that it was a good idea to convert to the 1953 style setup because it eliminates the equalizer pivot bracket on the 48-52 models. Should I order the parts for the 53 style and convert or just order the cables for the 51 and leave it as is.
Thanks!
Thanks!

The cables are stretched, frayed, and wont release once the handle is pulled. I dont want to replace everything but I have to. The truck sat for a long time and was neglected so alot of the pieces are rusted and seized. I just remember reading somewhere that the 53-60 design was much simpler and worked better. Instead of the pivoting bracket on the frame the cables are connected with a yoke and the new front cable just attaches to the yoke and is made to have adjustment there. I didnt know if anyone had done this or if it was reccomended. I just figured if I had to replace everything anyways I might as well upgrade while I have the chance.

I just had an experience that made me a believer in having the cables adjusted and working properly.
I was about 35 miles from home and the master cylinder took a s**t. It was a dual chamber (front & rear) and both section went out at the same time. No Brakes!
I had several stop lights to go through before I got on the Highway towards home. Between shifting into low gear and the e brake, I made it home and into the garage.
Made me thankful that I had the e brake in working order.
I went on a 1000 mile trip a month ago and we were on some roads with steep hills and 20 mph hairpin curves at the bottom of the hills. I am very thankful it didn't happen while we were on the cruise.

I saw some for sale online a few days ago but I can't find them now. I think they must have been on E-Bay. Anyway, they were NOS and the guy was asking a lot for them - as I recall maybe $50-60 for the pair. His ad implied that no one was making reproductions.

Are you producing these or do you know of a source for them? If so, I'd be interested - send me a PM.
Also, my original cables came with a short length of rubber (3-4") around each of the cables about half way between the equalizer and the rear backing plates. It was hardened and crumbling so I cut it off. It's similar to a piece of heater hose only smaller. I assume there's no reproduction available but I was wondering if anyone has come up with a useable substitute.

Am close to finalizing the process to reproduce these . Acquired 3 sets of NOS e-brake cable boots earlier this yr. 2 sets were for cars and the other set was for a truck . Looking at them they appear the same . They are except for one minor difference . The boots are all the same on the small end . Cars are 1/8 " in dia. smaller at the opening on the big end . Am in contact with a NOS person in N.J.. He is checking his inventory for the correct size . All are the same part # O1Y-2597 . On the opposite of the big end #'s read different for cars & trucks . Cars F20 & trucks F15 . So need one or a set to make a mold from . Maybe in 2012 . The heater boots have been selling well .Picked up some more rubber in B-ham , Ala. when I was there in late Oct.NPD parts will be in need of some more soon . The molding process is quite the same for the e-brake cable boots. Have all materials except a good boot to make a mold from .Later , Denny

Does anyone have a picture, a sketch, or a good description of how the emergency brake cabling is routed and secured on a 51 F1? I neglected to take any pictures, but kind of remember some brackets being attached to the crossmember just behind the cab. I don't recall which waythe pivot was oriented or the cables going to the rear drums were routed. Also, there seems to a bracket securing the cable coming from the e-brake handle; where does this bracket get secured?
I'm try to keep all of the original gear (replacing the cables of course), but connecting to a Ford 9". Any thoughts on whether this will work?
Any help is appreciated.
Any update on the e-cable boots?
Thanks
Jeff
