What's with the 7.3 market?
So here I am, just toying with the idea of someday (in a galaxy far far away) trading up to a 6.7 after it's been out a few years... so I thought I'd browse some ads and look up values of my truck.
What is up with the prices? I've seen some ads for more than what I paid 6 years ago! Also the "book" doesn't agree at all with what the market seems to be doing. Is the 7.3 really that hot of an item?

Yes...I have a good friend in the used car business. He sells low mileage/clean cars and trucks(bunches of them). He will buy every 7.3 he can get his hands on because he knows it will be a quick sell.He just cannot get his hands on many. Here in Texas they are really holding their value for some reason.I guess because of the 6.4 and 6.7 being like they are.
My son works for a Ford dealership here.He is a tech and I was talking to his boss one day which was willing to answer my questions about the 6.0,6.4 and 6.7...Main thing I took from what he told me was to keep my 7.3.

After buying my truck I stopped by the dealer to get a copy of the OASIS report. The SA was looking it over while printing and said "hmm, no engine work, must be a 7.3?" I said yep and he replied "don't sell it!"

You know come to think of it awhile ago I ran into a guy that works at a local diesel shop here and his comments were the same about my truck 1) is it the 7.3 & 2) don't sell it.
Two of my friends are looking for one right now. Well at least my 7.3 slow depreciation is making up for the last camper I had to get rid of.
Let me go apologize to my truck now for even thinking about it ...

It is also a regional thing, in the northeast 7.3s don't hold their value as well cause many of them are rusted to bits and diesels aren't as big a deal up here.

i went to a local dealership on thurs to buy their older tire changer and balancer. right away, before showing me the equipment, both owner and salesman said "wanna sell or trade in your truck." of course i said no.
as we were loading the equipment, the salesman's eyes lit up when he noticed i had a 6spd. they kept bugging and bugging for a price. i told them the only vehicle i would want is a 6.7 ford...which is a new truck. they asked about numerous dodges they had with cummings, but i told them...im a ford guy
they told me it is very hard to get a good quality 7.3 CC right now especially any manuals. most are rusted, or beat. they were also about crying when i left and I said "look on the shop floor...no oil drips huh?"

I live in northern new york, bought mine from a dealer a year and a half ago now with 145000 miles on it, rare to find one in such condition up here in the rust belt, mint condition, crew cab, heated seats, 4x4, inside and out was and still is beautiful, he was asking 19,900 for it. Yes, he was asking 20000 dollars for this. Keep in mind, he had four or five 7.3s sitting there or various that were within 3 or 4 thousand of this price but still, around here one with 200000 miles on it will still go for a good 13,000. Anyway, to make a long story longer I test drove it and he knocked a grand off, when it was all said and done I shook his hand at 15,600. Any of you southern guys south of the rust belt would make a killing off us up here.

The market here in Arizona is goofy. 7.3 4x4 Crew Cab trucks are listed for premium prices, especially if it's virgin truck (no mods, no lift etc). Excursions are ridiculous....over $20k, IF you can find one with 7.3 (6.0 liters are readily available...).
Regular cab trucks are relatively cheap, especially the 2wd models. Extra cabs are somewhere in between as far as price goes...
Right now F450 and F550 trucks are flooding the market. Most are coming from California because of their new diesel emissions regulations that will be taking effect in 2012. I was at the auction two weekends ago and saw a 7.3 F550 4x4 chassis cab go for $5500 but it was a regular cab model. The very next truck in line was the same thing but a Crew Cab and it went for $23k....at an auction! I think that is just crazy. There were two 6.0 liter F250 trucks as well, neither one would start or run. The first sold for $1700, the next for $2200, they both were crew cab.

In my end of the world, I have standing offers for my truck at about 5k over what I paid for it. Of course, it is a one owner with just over 50,000 actual miles. Mid-20s for one with low miles in good shape is a pretty common asking price and darn close to selling price. Maybe Ford should reintroduce it the way they are with the Mustang.
