I have searched but couldn't find someone with my configuration and a vss problem. I have a 2001 F150 4x4, 4.6L 5 speed, manual transfer case. I have experience with Rangers and know that they use the abs sensor on the rear axle for the vss. From what I have read the vss on my F150 is on the rear of the transfer case. I picked up a sensor from autozone and they sold me the one with the speedo gear. I haven't pulled mine yet but I think the gear driven sensors are for 2wd trucks. Does this sound correct? Also do I actually need an OSS instead of a Vss even though the code reader says a vss error PO500?

Btw the speedo doesn't work and the odometer quits after the truck is driven a short distance.

Go to the ROCK AUTO website and look under your year at the 'electrical'.
There are 7 listings for speed sensors.
One is for VSS5.
Look at the photos and match the one that looks like yours and get the FORD part number.

Thanks Blue I got it figured out....finally! I put 2n2 together and figured out I had a harness problem. No speedometer, 4wd, reverse lights, and 02 sensor codes. Someone had removed the connector bolt on the harness by the battery. Put the bolt back in and everything works...
