300 intake valve deposits

http://http://s1113.photobucket.com/...=49pics010.jpg

Hello FTE's,

Newbie here. Glad to be a part of such a cool website. Going to try to post a pic of my cylinder head with heavy deposits built up on intake valve stems-all 6 of them. Engine only has maybe 1500-2000 miles on it. I'm guessing cause was from incomplete or inefficient combustion from that 1 barrel carb I hate so much or the restrictive original intake system.

Was going to do the upgrades while engine is out but, will have to wait due to upcoming job change, which may mean I have to move again...YUK!

Heya Planetek,
Welcome to the site.

Not sure why the link you posted didn't work, but I was able to find them with the link you posted.

That's some nasty build up for only a couple thousand miles.
I'm not sure what would cause it, but thought getting the pics working may help clue someone in who does.

I appreciate that AB. The link not working was probably my fault. I'll get it eventually. Going to go ahead and lightly port heads this week, then put it back together and reinstall to make use of the truck for now. read your thread about cam install. Great stuff!

Cold starts and short trips might be a contributing factor.

Since there are so few miles on it, I'm guessing someone did a rebuild. Did anybody check the valve guides for proper clearence, and install new valve stem seals. That build up looks like oil coking on the back side of the valve. It gets sucked past the worn out guides and hits the back side of the HOT valve and leaves that mess. Just an idea. But it happened to me.

Hmm, that sucks because the head was completely gone through by a reputable machine shop where I used to live and they had been in business for many years. I remember he did say that the head had a hard service life. Maybe I should look for a replacement or have this one checked out again?
It always ran good and never blew any smoke. Oh well, already ordered the corded die grinder to port with. Guess I will take a close look at it as I disassemble it. Another disappointment in the car building hobby or another challenge I will have to overcome.

Just my $.02...

if you're gonna have it off AGAIN...WHy not have the head diassembled YOURSELF, take pics of it from all angles, and try another shop, and have them to simply hot tank the head ONLY....

I see no more than it being in the $50 range..If that...

ANd that'll open it all up and tell the tale....

Might even look at it being magnafluxed...

As an after thought, there are a couple of other ways that oil can find it's way into the intake side and leave these deposits. If the guides really are the problem, you should see signs of oil burning whe you first start up in the morning. This is caused by the oil on the valve stems running down into the runner area after the engine sits for a long time. It only last for a few seconds and then goes away. Another way is a problem with the PCV system. Another is, if you have a mechanical fue pump. Sometimes you will get a small hole in the rubber diaphram and oil can be sucked in and mixed with the gas that's going to the carb. How often do you have to top off the oil?

Long story short..Truck has been sitting for 3 years in my garage. Completely rebuilt brake system, fuel system, front suspension, shocks and added power steering. So, hasn't been driven for a long time.

Yeah, Sidewinder, I will probably do just that. Get a thorough check on it. Good shop fairly close.

Good points OR. I will replace that fuel pump anyway, along with water pump and whatever else for reliability and reinstall after head work.
