A LOT of car designs design the charge circuit with "just enough" capacity in the wiring system to do the job - no more.
The end result of that short sightedness is a dead battery after driving in heavy traffic with all the accessories turned on.
Heavy traffic = low engine rpm, lousy weather = heater on, rear defog on, headlights on, seat warmers on = battery slowly gets drained out because the charge circuit cannot keep up.
Putting a large cable between the alternator output post and the battery positive post cures that every time.
Been doing that trick for about 25 years now and I've NEVER had a comeback with a dead battery after installing something like that.
Here is how I did it on my F550.
Use 6g minimum with 4g being fully adequite for the task.

Talk about going the extra mile. He even made a trip to the DMV this morning when he noticed the tags were expired without even asking. He went way above and beyond any of my expectations.
Got 45.8 mpg on the way home climbing up and down the passes the whole way. Even with the new 520 injectors mileage was great and had great power with no smoke.
PS: Time to change your sig Dan, your Jetta isn't stock anymore.

Nice! If it hasn't been done you might want to remove the vent components so you can top off without holding down the vent. These TDIs shared the fuel tank with the gasser so it has a vent. Pretty easy: How to vent the fuel tank trick on Volkswagen TDI

Thank you very much.
I will work on that sig this afternoon.

I'm glad for the opportunity to learn.
