Other than buying gas, is there a way to program out this message? It is a good reminder once but can get very annoying, especially when it is inaccurate and there is plenty of gas left.
No, it can not. Personally, I would never let your truck get that low and your fuel pump will last much longer. Mine has done that twice in the last 3 years. I try to never go below 1/4 tank in any EFI vehicle so that the fuel pump has plenty of fuel around it to keep it cool.

I very seldom let my tank get below 1/2. I have always bought brand name gasoline but I take advantage of lower prices when I can. Especially when prices are .10 to .15 cent per gallon lower.
Depends on the fuel mileage you are getting but i have seen the 50 miles warning go off with the needle at 3/8.
Running e85 with extended idle times will net you mid-single digit fuel economy and your warning light goes off much earlier than you'd expect.
if the 50 miles warning display comes on, i just press the 'select' button once and it will go back to the previous display (e.g. AVG MGP/ ODO) until the fuel milage drops to 25 miles to empty when the warning panel will come back. Pressing the select button again will make the warning display go away until 10 miles to empty, at which point the display warning and chime will come back again. Cant tell you what happens below "7 miles to empty"
now ... before the lecture starts .... there was plenty of fuel in the tank. When i filled it, it only took 15 gallons or so. That whole display cycle happend on the 12 mile trip to go get fuel.
The problem was that i was idleing the truck with it parked down hill and the fuel guage would not reset once the truck was leveled. There is a TSB about this, but not hardly worth the effort to get it "fixed"

i sould add, this is on a 2010 XL which comes with a smaller LCD screen than the XLT's with the Convinience package
I took my wifes escape for gas the other day and it said 37miles to E. Well, it only took 14 gallons so...It's got a little room for error I'm sure as a dummy preventative.
