I will be getting my eco boost with 3.73 in January hope fully sooner!! so i will be getting the "winter" blend of fuel. so that doesnt help the mpg's and i guess some summer with a few miles on it and summer blend I hope to be good to go!!
At nearly 5k miles I have saw no difference in fuel economy from day one.

The worst things you can do to hurt mpg are:
1. drive fast
2. make jack rabbit starts
3. drive into a strong headwind
3. add a topper or larger tires with more aggressive tread
4. load the truck up with 1000 lbs of bull bars, headache racks, toolboxes and tools.
5. Don't tow anything as your mpg will drop like a rock. 9-15 depending upon load, wind resistance and your speed.

I am getting 18 mpg average on Hwy and 16 overall around town and hwy combined. If I baby on hwy 60mph I can get close to 20. I bought the 3.73 for towing power and that this truck has! I drive my corolla for mileage.

I like synthetic oil as I use a lot of Amsoil and Mobil 1 in my small engines, Atv and Tractor. I have gone back and fourth. I decided to stick to Motorcraft synthetic blend. Ford Stands behind this oil and says 10k. so what I do is 5k. I believe oil gets dirty before it wears out. So no matter if i am buying $10 a quart Amsoil or $13 a gal at Wally world I do not believe i am getting any better protection. Ford uses top quaility Base oils. Matter of fact I am using this oil in my Hyundai and Toyota cars as well.

I prefer 100% synthetic and I am changing to Pennzoil Platinum. It has better specs than the MC Syn blend (it exceeds their specs) and it meets the tougher Honda/Acura HT-06 spec for their turbo charged engines.

Maybe so but I can tow over 11000 lbs without breaking a sweat. Can you?

Sweat?

Cool! What are you towing? I typically don't tow anything. I just like big pickups, so I can intimidate and keep all the other A-holes on their cellphones from running over me.
Just seems with the barrage of advertising that Ford is currently up to pushing the "ecoboost" concept as some sort of ecological god send with the 3 or 4 mpg improvement over the last generation of motors is a load of fluff. I still like Ford though. Just quit watching the commercials. Of course, Mike Rowe has proven to be an adept "**** shoveler".

Bad assumptions here, or missing assumption to be exact. If you have to add $30K to get an EB, then your current truck must be worth next to nothing. The part of upgrading to a truck that's worth a lot more is missing in your calc, potential repairs, resale, etc.
In most cases (almost always) it makes no sense to trade a car for better fuel consumption only.

Fact check

Current rig 2004 with 75000 miles. Trade in value est. 16000. Manufacturers list on equal 2011 rig, with the "ecoboost" Lariat package with bells and whistles. 45000. Pretty darn close to 30,000. And 16000 and nothing are a considerable distance apart. My original point being a 10 to 20 % improvement in MPG isn't worth 30,000 dollars. Of course you can argue with a newer trade in you will spend 15000 less. So it's a 40 year improvement in payback. And you are correct, mpg comparisons in a full size pickup forum are kind of silly. If you want fuel economy you aren't buying a pickup.

I'm getting around 16 mpg, that's just going to work and back, I've noticed mpg getting worse due to warm up, I can see 15's in the future.

I can't drive truck any easier

I like my truck, I understand I have the worst combo for getting decent mpg
4x4, 3.73, 20" wheels

Hopefuly as engine gets some miles my mileage gets better

ecoboost does what it advertised they were able to make a motor with 365hp 420ft/lbs torque a super flat torque curve that manages to get about 18mpg mix driving

also try running premium it can help your mileage more than you think on this motor

The 98 F150 with 5.4L would be getting 11-13mpg in the same conditions. I know I have the worst combo for good fuel economy, I also use E10 fuel. I just got it a few weeks ago and my mpg has been bucking the wind every time to I go work. Coming home the other day when it was finally calm I was getting 21mpg going 70. The cut off for this engine combo, ecoboost w/ 3.73 is 65mph, where I can easily get 18-19mpg. Going 60mph I have no doubt I can get 20-21. The stoplight in the 4 miles of town driving kills it for sure.

Overall tho for as much power as it has, I'm not complaining about the mpg since I'm going faster and using a lower rear end than what hte EPA tested with. This engine has the potential for great fuel economy, it just varies so much with weather, wind, roads, and of course how much you want to have fun.

So if Ford rates the 6.2L with 3.73 as follows...

4x2 13 city, 18 hwy
4x4 12 city, 16 hwy

Do you attribute most of the loss in fuel economy (when compared with more commonly found 3.55-equipped Ecoboosts rated at 16 city/22 hwy in 4x2 or 15/21 in 4x4) to the larger/heavier/thirstier 6.2L motor, or the 3.73 gears, or equal doses of both?
