Question first fuel filter change question

i just bought my truck an 05 with the 6.0 and i need to change the fuel filter (or want to for peace of mind). is the one on the top of the motor the only one? any diesels i have worked on have a water seperator in the system... not this one... or is there another location....

Primary filter is on the drivers side frame rail. That is where the water drain is also. There is a write up in the Tech Folder on changing the fuel filters.

Inside the frame rail, under the drivers door is the HFCM (Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module). That is the fuel pump (actually a lift pump in the case of the 6.0L), primary fuel filter and water separator.

You'll need a 6mm allen wrench to pull the drain plug and a 32mm socket to remove the cap that holds the filter in. Like everything else, Racor/Ford/Navistar is what you want and replace both filters at the same time. Use some new motor oil on the o-rings (the kit will come with two new ones). And just snug 'em down...don't over torque or you'll crack the caps. One last thing...don't use a 1/2" drive racket in the secondary filter cap...it will crack; use a socket (24mm I think).

I mis-spoke; you need a 36mm socket (the same size as the oil filter) to remove the primary fuel filter.

Yes, there should be two filters and two o-rings in the box when they hand it to you. Should look something like this:

[PFF-4616] - Racor PFF4616- Ford 6.0 Liter Turbo Diesel Fuel/Water Seperator Filters: Pick Up & Excursion-REPLACES FD-4604/FD-4616 - Diesel Filters,Additives, brake rotors, and brake pads for Chevy, Dodge and Ford Diesel Trucks

Make sure the primary (larger) filter has the "aqua-block" media on it. Otherwise the HFCM won't be able to separate the water out of the fuel.

Yes just get a pan and pull the plug and let it drain out, i like pics so this may help also just remember this is a 2X4 on a 4X4 you will have a driveline in the way http://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/D...ence-Guide.pdf
then get one of these to ease the pain.

One of these helps also because it is short

As pop said 4x4 not much room i cut the socket down so it just had enough left to fit on cap then find smallest 1/2 drive ratchet as in the thickness of head , makes it easer to do.

Is this where you buy your filters? Its way cheaper that O'rielys.

Yes, that's where I buy all my PSD filters. If they are or aren't cheap than Oreilly's...I have no clue. I know Oreilly's doesn't stock the fuel filters (Racor mfd) and maybe the Fram oil filters. So I just order several of each when I place an order with Diesel Filter....usually about 16 oil and 8 fuel, shows up in two boxes at my house. I'm an OEM guy, I try to keep OEM parts on all of our rides.

Your still going to get a little dibble out of the HFCM, even after you've drained the water separator first. But it won't be near as messy if you didn't. I don't remember if your '05 is 4WD or not; if it is you may find it easier to use a couple of extensions on your 3/8" drive and have the ratchet behind the tranny cross member. There is more room there behind the transfer cause. It's not an issue on the 2WD trucks...because there isn't a front drive shaft in the way.
