EGR Valve Won't Budge...

hi all,

I'm trying to remove my EGR valve but it won't budge. I have tried the claw to pry it

Is there a special tool I can buy?

thanks,

If you've tried a crow's foot (claw), grab a pair of Channel Locks and GENTLY grab the body of the valve. Twist it about 20 degrees, then pull straight up.

It does not require much force at all.

(Mark, i think you posted pictures of the hole where the EGR valve resides.)

You are not the first one with this issue. See the following video on you tube for how to......with a little humor.

This link should take you to 6.0L power stroke egr repair on you tube.

One of the pics in the album should be the tool I used.

After turning it a little, put your pry tool of choice under the tab. Don't try to pry it out all in one motion, put some pressure on it with the pry bar and rock it back and forth. There is very little play but it will move slightly each way and come up a tiny bit each rock. After just a few rocks it will suddenly pop loose. Should go back in with a firm push, no rocking or twisting.

rotate the vavle to expose bolt holes. wrap wire (about 12 inches) through each hole. wrap ends on a large screwdriver and find a fulcrum point and lift...easy exit.

same one I use to

actuly I used 2 of those little pry bars it helps to pry up with 2 bars so it comes out evenly

but 1 will work you just need to alternate side with the pry bar as it comes out or it will bind on itself

I've done both ways.

Wire through holes, piece of rebar used alternator as leverage.

Pry bar.

Both worked.

Did you try the tool I suggested (available at all Home Depots)? You want something with a flat/beveled edge (as thin of an edge as possible) that can fit in the crevice but is wide enough to apply some force. A thin edge can catch the bottom flange of the EGR valve (between the bottom of the valve body and the intake flange). Don't even need to rotate the valve.

The first time I did mine it felt HARD and was tough to take out. I turned it so that the bolt holes were away from each other. I got a pry tool and carefully worked on each sides and finally wham it was out.

Look bebeard try the wire trick and the little pry bar at same time its the way i do it , a large crow bar and lift on the wire against the alternater and pry with the little pry bar. The little pry bar can be bought at home depot.
