460 Bellhousing Plate question

I have a 1987 F250 that me and my brother put a 460 in years ago. It sat for three years and now I am driving it again. The clutch release bearing seems to be going bad, it is very loud driving and in nuetral.

When we put the truck together we did not have the bellhousing plate. The bellhousing is not completely round, it is open on the bottom for service i guess.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the service plate is necessary, it seems so because without it water and mud are free to get into the bellhouseing?? This may be why the bearing is going bad....

I am a new user and would appreciate the help.

Welcome aboard...yea you want to keep that covered if you can. Try and find a cover, or make one out of an easy working metal like copper.

Those are the two condition when the release bearing shouldn't be spinning, and shouldn't be wouldn't be making any noise if it was "bad".

Sure its not the trans input shaft bearing you hear?

Missing the plate which goes behind the flywheel will shorten up the distance and can cause the input shaft to bottom in the pilot housing at the rear of the crankshaft flange.
This could, and likely would trash the rearmost bearing of the gearbox input shaft.

What kind is it?
T-19?
