OK guys I need some help here since the dealer is of no use.
At the bottom of the steering shaft is a knuckle( universal joint type thing). Over this is a boot of some sort( the dealer doesn't show it ). Mine is tore and there doesn't seem to be a replacement available, well maybe if I buy the whole shaft. If this was your truck, what would you do to keep water, dust/dirt, mud out of the joint? Grease and duct tape?
You might be able to buy just that part from a salvage yard. About a year ago, I replaced my steering column - the cover was included. I didn't need it because the original column had on already. The yard might sell it as a separate item.
I have had the same problem on my 1999 Ranger. I found a replacement boot and put it on. It tore also. I think it was a Dorman replacement.
The rack and pinion boots are in good shape but this one on the steering just seems to be too much bending for the rubber. I'm thinking some kind of fabric would be the next step, or just leaver B. and add it to the maintainence schedule.
How about using a section of bicycle inner tube, holding one end in place with a screw type clamp? Would that do what you are looking for?
Now thats an idea. I have some old inner tubes I could cut up. Thanks for the idea as it would probably hold better than the duct tape. I thinkin 2 peices, one over the top and one over the bottom clamped together. As long as I keet the top one over the bottom one it should keep the yuck out.
