intermittent fuel gauge problems

I have a 1996 with a I6 300/5 speed M5 trans, 230K miles. Dual tanks.

It started with the front tank (i think), but the fuel gauge only works occasionally. When it does it's usually only right half of the time. I run it til its dry and switch over to the other one. When I get gas I put some in each tank so I have a fall back.

Any ideas? Switch, sending unit, something else?

Thanks!
Brad
