Truck feels a little sluggish / fuel mpg not so good

A friend just bought a 02 F250 4x4 crew cab. It came from a dusty environment.

So far he has replaced all the filters, had the gas tank dropped and screen and intake cleaned, had the tranny serviced, and checked the intercooler boots for leaks. One hub was sticky and that was repaired. Slip yoke on driveshaft greased to eliminate klunk.

It sounds good and idles smooth. It's just not 'peppy'. Compared to my truck it feels sluggish off the line. Fuel economy is not so good...maybe around 12.

Not sure what to check next..... could the turbo being dusted be an issue? Have not opened up the turbo yet to look at it, but we were thinking about doing that next. When accelerating hard, there is a significant lag before the turbo kicks in.

Thanks for your feedback!

Here is a good thread for MPG losses. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ght=MPG+thread

Has your friend cleaned the EBPS and tube?

Did they take apart the mixing chamber and clean the screens or just the big screen on the foot? Check the up-pipes for signs of leakage.

I'm not sure on the mixing screens. We'll try the EPB tube clean and report back. It may be a few days before we get to it.

Thanks!

If they didn't clean the screens in the chamber, I'd throw a fuel pressure gauge on it.

My ebpv tube was clogged and had a hole in it, replaced it and it helped, then checked the ICP and it had oil in it, replaced it and it runs even better and has it up to 16mpg, My truck was a service truck in a previous life and was filthy everywhere, So Check everything, all connections. When I first got my truck it was a sad puppy, could barely get out of its own way, it runs pretty good now, so keep chipping away at it. All those things listed is the perfect go to.

How many miles are on it? I replaced my HPOP around 200K and it made a noticeable difference. I didn't realize how tired it was until I put the new one on. Felt like another 50 HP.

I would have liked to have gotten an Adrenaline but time didn't permit me to wait for one so had to get a remanufactured one from the dealer.

Nice, hope your down there for fun and not work. If you find it does point to a fuel restriction, you can unhook the fuel line before the pump and blow some air back toward the tank. If it runs a whole lot better you know it's the screens.
