Thinking of buying a 99 1 ton dump.

Hi all. I mostly lurk in the pre powerstroke forum, but I am looking at a 99 7.3 5speed with 101k. $11,700 is the asking price. I am pretty versed in my idi, but know little about powerstrokes. I read the sticky on purchase and thank the writers for that. I have heard about early/late 99's. What is to that?

Is there anything in particular for this model to be aware of besides what's in the sticky? How long are these engines good for in these particular trucks? Price seems ok I think.

Also I will be going out of town to get this. Is there a good mechanic in Richmond Va that could check this thing over for me that anyone knows about? You could PM me on that if you wish. This is a significant investment for me so I need to be prepared. Thank you guys.

Only subtle differences in the Early 99 vs the late 99, smaller turbo and injectors are the main difference.

For the most part there are all very similar at the core. Early 99's (build dates before midyear 98 I think) have a smaller turbo, a slightly different intake, and a 15 degree HPOP versus the 17 degree in late 99 on. Depending on engine serial numbers somewhere around mid 2001 models have PMR's (Powdered Metal Rods) as opposed to the earlier models having forged rods. Those are the slight differences in powertrain I can think of right now. Creature comforts are getting kinda nice in the 2002 models. But essentially the same rig IMO.

Do you happen to know the manufacture date when that changed?

Trust me, youll love a PSD over the IDI, ive had two idis and the psd has so much more power and has been much more reliable as a whole.

I do not know for certain, I would assume based on information from the forum the cutoff for powertrain should be 12/1998 for the suspension I believe it to be march, but there are some odd ***** out there too.

E99 should not have an AIH(Air Intake Heater) or the relay for it, so there should only be one large relay on the passenger's side head. Below the intake spider the "orange" boots feeding the heads will be smaller, and there will not be foil on the intercooler pipes. Although many including myself remove the foil anyway.

It took me a minute but now I am rolling on the floor. On a serious note don't shy away from a early 99. They are just as reliable, and since the turbo is a little smaller then the late 99 they spool faster

I didn't know the early stick trans were 5 speed. I have a freind with build date 2-99 its a late 99, he has a 6 speed. Dose anybody know if the five speed is the right transmission? Ask the guy the build date, its on the door frame.

It's a 6-speed. I have one, the majority of the time you'll use it as a 5-speed, but there is an extra low "granny gear" that is available, but only needed in certain situations. So you're essentially starting in 2nd gear, but it says first on the shifter.
