F350-F450 Crew, MPG

Hi all !!!

Newbie here... i'm in market to buy my first dually and i was wonder what's the MPG between the F 350, gear 3,73 4x4, crew, 2012 and F 450, gear 4,30 4x4, crew, 2012.
I should sign this week for one of those tow choice, the F350 have to order it and the F 450 is on the dealer lots and have my prefered colord, but i'm afraid the 4.30 gear kills the MPG.

Loaded and unloaded please!!!

Thanks.

Truck in my sig with 3.73's and just over 10,000 miles driven:

Around town I get 15 to 15.5 if I drive like an egg is under the throttle, 13 to 13.5 when I drive with my usual semi-lead foot style.

Highway is 17 to 18 unloaded driving 55 to 60, 16.5 mpg or so at 65+.

Towing I get 10 to 11 with my 12K trailer going 60 to 65.

How often do you tow and how heavy?

I get 18-19 running solo and 11.5 to 12 towing my fifth wheeler.. I'm pretty easy on the throttle and tow at about 62... Much better than my 2008 with the 6.4.

There may be a difference in cost of annual registration between the 350 and 450 so check your state motor vehicle dept. for that info, insurance may be a cost difference as well. A 350 DRW will certainly fulfill your towing needs, unless they make you a swingin' deal on that 450.

I got back the first week in September Travis AFB, Ca to Kansas, 1792 miles each way. Last truck was F250 FX4. This truck does much better on fuel with the same 5th wheel, same speed and same route.

1. Pulling 5th wheel in wind low of 9.5 (60 mph)
2. Pulling 5th wheel no wind 11.5-12.1 (60 mph)
3. Empty is usually 19 mpg and as high as 20.1 even 21 once in a while (60 mph)

I had 1200 miles on truck when we left for California in May now have 10,000. Pull the 5th wheel almost all the time in 6th, and stays at 1800 rpm. I struggled hard between 3.73 non LS and 4.10 LS. I am very happy with the truck and would not change a thing.

Maybe if I drove faster the lower geared rear end would be worse on mileage. However I don't drive faster than 60 empty or loaded, just an old grandma. I'm never in a hurry. Hope this helps, good luck with your decisions.

the chassis cabs have had some engine problems for some reason, I think the 450 has a different motor??? than the 350's do, someone correct me if I am wrong.

also I would want 3:55's if you can get them. anything more than that is too much gear IMO on these trucks. my truck is 3:31 and I think it will pull anything just fine. I say get the 350.

350 and 450 pickups have the same engine/tune.

Chassis/cab 450/550's have a different tune with reduced HP and TQ ratings and there have been some past issues with those engines.

had an 08 f-450 and i almost bought an 11 f-450. after specking both the 350 & 450, the gcvr of my 08 f-450 was 26k and the 11 f-350 is 29k. i went with the 350 for two reasons. the 373 ls gears and the insurance cost. the 450 was rated "commercial" and so the ins cost was more. the only thing i miss from the 450 is the turning radius. pull a 15k fiver at road speeds all the way to 75 mph. fuel is 9-10 average. empty averages 16. same on mph.

Thank guys.

The 350 seem to be not bad at alll, but the 450 is all ready at dealer parking so don't have to wait for delivery, i wonder what those guys whith the 450 is the MPG. i don't whant like 10 and 11 MPG unloead pacing in town and that is what i'm afraid whith the 4.10 gear. Both truck have decent price. Both gone be commercial rated.

the 450 has 4:30 gears not 4:10 so fuel milage will differ from the 4:10. first time i have heard that the 350 is rated commercial. the wait won't hurt but it is your choice.

My 350 gets an average of 9.3 when at work towing 30k gvw half the day and 20k gvw the other half. When not towing around town I average 14.
