v-10 best fuel mileage
#31
I just completed a 2400 mile through Northern CA, NV, ID, WY and MO. 2005 F250, CC, SB, FX4, 4:10 and 19,000 miles on the odometer. Cargo = 3 adults, 2 dogs and luggage
Seemed to get high 14's MPG at 70 - 75 MPH. The best MPG was 16 MPG. This was my first long trip with my Super Duty (purchased in August 2011 from the original owner)

Drafting a semi at 87mph I dont think once in my life have a come across a semi going that fast! And if I did I dont know if I could be that brave to draft it closely. After mythbusters showed pretty good results from semi drafting I tried it as much as I could for a while, and I didnt see any improvements at all.

The trip from Reno to Wells is mostly downhill I think. But that truck either had cruse control or a fast govonor because other then a couple of steep hills were he lost a little speed he was fixed at 87. I try to keep abot 1 & 1/2 car lengths back and only on long open highways so I can peak around him occasionally and if I can figure out what channel he's on and see if he complains. Some don't mind others can't stand it. When I drove with my Dad when I was younger we didn't mind if traffic was clear.

Just thought I'd say hi... I'm an upstate NY'er trasnplanted to Ohio. Climbed most of the mountains in the 'dacks. Done the trip with the V10 a few times, round trip was getting me mid 14's on the dash and a hair under 14 hand calc (mine is very consistantly .7 high).

Another time I followed a friend of mine from MN to IL on our way to the race track. He has a Freight liner toter home pulling a 30' stacker, I had a c4500 Kodiak class c pulling a 28' featherlite, since I trust him a lot and he has a fuel sponsors credit card, I followed him really close maybe 15 feet. It doubled my mpg from 6-7 to 11 plus. I could tell easy as I hardly had to push the go pedal at all.
Some big rig guys get down right mad when you try to catch a ride.

Well maybe I should, I do admit I dont travel much out of Ohio except to NY. I've never really been out west or down south. Around here its rare to find a semi doing much over 70... up until a couple years ago the speed limit was 55 for semis anyhow. I recall on some of my Ohio/NY trips on the cb when entering ohio some of them would read over the air the "welcome to ohio" sign, and then tack on to it "prepare to be pulled over". I have come across a few travelling a little faster in PA.
However I think that fast is a bit rediculous for a semi, I dont hink I have ever even had my truck into the 80's. Ok I have in my F150 but thats when I was in college, I've grown up since then.
I70 and 71 here in central ohio is packed full of truckers, and I drive 80mi round trip to work so I experience quite a few a day. I never have tried drafting as close as 15', but mythbusters even noticed a decent gain at 50' so I try that. When in the city traffic is packed a lot closer they dont seem to mind you getting within a car length, but once your outside the city and the carse are more sparse it seems like everytime I have tried the fellow starts slowing down or something. I never have put a cb in my 350... havent found a spot I can mount the 9' whip on it, and havent bought a smaller one yet.
