It's actually the intake and heads from what I understand. When they came out with this motor in 99 the intake and heads didn't breath very well thus the 99 year had a lower HP and torque rating. In 2000 ford changed them to the PI (Performance Improvment) intake and heads. I think they also added a few more threads to the spark plug holes in 2000. But there is supposed to be more meat in the PI heads for porting.

Ok I see I'm still learning. Can you do a EGR delete since you said it will have a EGR

You could or get one that doesn't have an EGR but I think it's required for california and they look for it when they smog it. The rule is it has to have what ever requirments were required for that year. So a 2000 engine would need the smog requirements for that year. If I don't make any big mods, like removing the EGR, I don't think I'll even have to take it to the referee. Besides I don't think the EGR makes that much difference in performance.

so a EGR delete is supposed to increse performance in gassers as well as diesels?

I don't know about diesels. Never owned one. I don't think they have EGR's do they? I thought it was a gasser thing.
Some say it improves performance others say the EGR helps lower camber temps and helps it run cooler. I don't know enough about the smog stuff so I just let it be and work on what I can. Making it breath better with better intake, heads, porting, and some exhaust headers with a new Y pipe.

I do believe that the crank design change (for the 2000 model) was more important then the intake and exhaust changes.

I didn't know that but that makes sense. I read somewhere that the 2000 and later had a higher compression

i got 14.8 mpg hand calculated (15.1 on lie o meter), cruise set at 68 mph from the OH/PA state line to Syracuse NY on I90 this month. 13.4 average hand calculated on the 1100 mile trip from home to (and around) the Adirondacks and back.

usually daily driving gets me 9-10 depending on how much i tow my equipment trailer, though i have seen 7. mostly non-highway. i do kind of have a lead foot

Go as slow as you can in your highest gear. With my five-speed tranny, I've seen 15mpg just cruising down the flat freeway doing 50mph. But who can do that on a regular basis? Best I've seen on an all-highway tank is 12.9mpg.

I have a 99 that you can see the accessories I have with my post. The first year I had it I drove a 200 mile trip at 70 mph with no wind and pretty level. I got 17 on the way and 17 again on the way back about two hours later. It has never done that again. Driving around town on a tank I will get about 10 and usually around 14 on the road at 70.
Drove about 12,000 miles last Winter in various terrain and winds pulling a 5th wheel. I kept track of my mileage for the entire trip for just the towing portion. My total weight on the road was 21,400 when towing. For the Winter I averaged 8.5 and usually drove about 55-60, although we did put in a couple days at 70 when in a hurry.
I never trust a mileage check on one tank because the tank capacity varies so much depending on the levelness of the ground at the fill. I have a 29 gal tank, but the most I seem to get in on a normal level fill is 24 gals. I used to be able to nurse in another 5 gals until they changed the nozzles on the pumps but now the most I can do is maybe another gallon. I found one old pump this year that I was able to get 5 more gallons in after pump stopped. There also seems to be a pretty consistent 5 gallons left in tank after the pump shuts off.

yeah most of my fill ups are 24-25 gallons and if i go on a few little highway trips i can get close to 10MPG. the most i have gotten was 10.7MPG and that was about half a tank on the highway

I have a 2001 V10 crew cab F250 4x4 with 89,000.
Best I can get is 16 mpg at 55-60, at 65 it will get around 14 mpg.
at 75 mph I get 11-11.5

Pulling my 3,000 lb 19 ft boat I get between 9-11 at 65 mph.
I have a K&N cold air intake and headers on it with a banks trans shift kit and 265-75-16 tires.

The other day I was with a friend in his 2006 Dodge 3/4 ton cummins 4x4 with 90K on it. I asked him how good the milage was and he said it had always gotten over 20 since new. Said he just got back from a 325 mile trip and hit the milage indicator in the mirror and 22.9 mpg popped up!! I almost fell over, he said it was bone stock and got 16-19 mpg pulling a 20 ft boat.

I just completed a 2400 mile through Northern CA, NV, ID, WY and MO. 2005 F250, CC, SB, FX4, 4:10 and 19,000 miles on the odometer. Cargo = 3 adults, 2 dogs and luggage

Seemed to get high 14's MPG at 70 - 75 MPH. The best MPG was 16 MPG. This was my first long trip with my Super Duty (purchased in August 2011 from the original owner)
