drilling square holes

you guys might have seen this...but it got me all giddy just watching

TOOL HEADS !!! (it's like a gear head but with tools) PAY ATTENTION.

how many times have you needed a square hole and had to drill it out and then work with a file to square it up..... the japanese (those crafty devils) have solved your problem...this is just too dang cool (and expensive probably)

How the Hell Can This Magical Square Hole Drilling Machine Work?

That's pretty cool. I suppose the bit is free as long as you purchase thier special press for a 100 g's. I had to do the round hole small file for the carriage bolts for the rear floor section of my panel. Drilling those in a hand held drill would have been like a ride in an amusement park, lol. Nice link and amazing what man can develope isn't it. Thanks John

Oh tthat is sweet! 35 years I've been in some type of machining trade or repair of machining equipment and I have never seen that. Its a pretty simple design really. A triangle shaped bit on an eccentric is what it looks like. Interesting! Thanks for the link John.

Thats what my wife said when she saw it! It looks like a spirograph! I wonder what it will cost and if its on the market yet? I know a 3/8 inch broach is about 120.00 from McMaster Carr.

mortising bit & chisel - YouTube

These similar mortisers have been used in the woodworking industry for years. Never thought of using it on steel.

I bought a roper whitney punch press at the swapmeet for $25 and you can buy dies for square holes. The pic isn't mine, mine is a little bigger and has the ratchet arm addition.

A smaller version then mine, but it shows how it works.

Not sure what I'd use it for, but just seeing it work makes me want one! Really cool.

Well seeling as how I run machines worth more than that one, and have to pay for the bits, I'm guessing the don't give those ones away...
