leakey rear window

01' s-crew with rear slider. I just noticed some water droplets near the head liner after the rain yesterday. My question...is the grey trim around the window part of the window itself? Can it be removed with glass still in place. Can't seem to find any clear answers. Thanks

If I remember correctly, you have a high mounted brake light that is leaking the water in. To answer your question though the gray plastic is part of the window. There are bolts through the truck's body from the plastic to the interior. Nuts on the inside.

I calked around the brake light with no luck. I put some clear masking tape on the seams hopefully isolate the leak.

the window has a bytle rubber ring glued to it, then pushed aginast the outside of the cab and bolts thru with studs to the inside. The plastic ring then bolts on over the window with a second set of bolts... all the nuts can been seen from the inside if you pull the trim off and pull the head liner down a couple inches.... the problem is normally that the ends of the bytle rubber ring meet at the top on the drivers side, between the light and the top corner.. if thats where your leaking, you need to take the window out and install new rubber.. kits at Auto Zone for $10... the plastic ring can stay in place.

Took my 01 to the local glass shop and they charged me $75 and 45 minutes later i drove off with no leaks - dont mess with any part of the trim outside its all part of window . They removed the 10/12 bolts from inside the cab - pushed out the window - scraped and cleaned all the old sealant and put new stuff on and guaranteed no leaks

$75 seems cheap for a glass shop. It's going to be nice this weekend. I think I'm going to tackle it my self. I taped up all the seams on the out side and after a really hard rain today I have no leaks....it just looks hillbilly.... I'll take some photos through out the process and post them.

-------copied from the above post that i referenced from 2007-------------
"This morning i decided to dig a little deaper. Took the interior trim off the sides door post, and pulled the head liner and bottom trim out a couple inches. I could easily get to the 12 nuts holding the window in. removed the 12 nuts and started working the glass outward from the inside by prying a small screw driver easily around and around untill i had it worked out 1/4 inch. went on the outside and pulled the window out and set on tail gate. took 45 minutes to get to this point. took 45 minutes to clean off the old butyl seal off the windwo and truck lip. Ran to auto zone and got a 15 ft length of sealer for $8. THis looks like a 3/8 inch diameter black rubber (bytle) rope. You push it onto the window into the small track and it sticks good. put the joint at the bottom. set the window in the truck and push it in to seal. Go on the inside and tighten the 12 screws evenly starting at the top center and worknig outward. go around 3-4 times and pull in eavenly, tighten first at the top. Total it took about 2.5 hours. Works great if you clean up the surfaces and tighten in pattern. Looking at the photo above helped to understand how it is sealed."
