Battery life and Idling

I have I guess would be sort of a weird inquiry, but i know the guru's on this site would know the answers. I have the 2006 F250, and I am planning an outing to the drive-in movies on Friday night. Here are my questions:

1. The theater sounds come from your vehicle speakers. Will my batteries be able to maintain enough juice to start the truck after 2 hours? Nothing would be worse than the movie ending everyone is rolling out, and my battery is dead, lol. My sounds are stock with exception of a Double Din Pioneer head unit.

2. Also, any issue with idling for extended periods (maybe over 30 mins) because it may be a little cool and I may use the trucks heater. (I know if I end up doing this, it would eliminate the first issue I asked about with the batteries.)

Thanks,
Cheers!

If you don't turn the key to "Accessory" the truck will time out the power to the radio (about 10 minutes I think) and shut everything down. I don't know how long healthy batteries will live on an extended draw like that...but I'm willing to bet you'd be alright if your batteries are in good shape. I've run the radio in my truck for a couple of hours (windows down) while taking care of a couple of projects and the truck fired right up.

Wet stacking if you don't have a "high idle" mod on your truck. At idle the 6.0L can over-cool it's self...thus not all the fuel injected "burns off" (you need compression & heat to burn diesel). Thus the fuel will condense and work it's way past the piston rings and into the lube oil....diluting the oil and wreaking havoc with your lube oil system. Without having a high-idle mod your going to have to think about hold your foot on the throttle/go-pedal to keep the RPM around 1200 to keep the all the fuel burning.

If it was me, I'd take a blanket and jumper cables (just in case).

IF you have good batterys, 2 hours is nothing just for the radio and it shouldn't be a problem.

I let mine idle all the time.....30/60 minutes at a time.

No problems yet. EGR valve is still very clean.

You may get away with the excessive idling but as a rule the 6.0 doesn't like it. I don't think the person parked next to you in a drive in will appreciate a diesel idling next to them. The 6.0 isn't the quietest idler on the market. As far as batteries, they should be no problem.

Put the key in the accessories position and you should have no problem with the batteries.

Idle the truck and the truck will probably fair better than you will after your "neighbors" get done with you.

Alright, good information. I forget to mention that I have the high idle mod installed. I forget how loud the truck idles, during the movie, with the high idle mod on, the neighbor probably wont even be able to hear, lol!

TYLER: Do you have the high idle mod? Or do you idle "regular" rpm?

The batteries are brand new, less than a month old to be exact.

They have a few that still are hanging around....there is only one in Atlanta, and I am not sure where another one is to be honest.

Yeah, I think you'll be alright to run off the batteries since they're that new. These trucks idle/run pretty dang loud...so you won't be popular from the sound at best. Hated for the smell of the exhaust at worse.

I know of three in NW Ark/SW Missouri area. When I was dating my wife we took in a drive in movie a couple of times. Thank goodness for bench front seats

I have the high idle mod done.

I use it once in a while. Not all the time.

I heard the 6.7PSD idle the other day and was shocked. you almost can never hear it...it makes the 6.0 seem real LOUD, but comparing a 6.0 to a 5.9 cummins, the 6.0 seems like its WAY quiet

I was standing outside of work the other day and there was a 6.7 at a stoplight no more than 25 feet away from me, he was the only thing on the road and I couldn't even hear it. It was ridiculous. When the light turned green there was a faint turbo whistle on acceleration, that's it. I'm not sure I would even want a truck THAT quiet.

And to get back on topic, you should be fine with the radio on for 2 hours. I would turn the key back instead of forward though. Like everyone else mentioned, I would avoid leaving the truck running in order to not **** off the people next to you.

When I noticed the 6.7 at the camp ground I drove by it slow on the golf cart.....I thought I might have heard it running but was not sure, went back and sure enough it was. I was SHOCKED.

Kinda scary
