TO CUMMINS OR NOT TO CUMMIMNS
i have a 94 lwb crew cab 4x4 w/ a 7.3l idi. runs great. the only problem is that a have a 99 super duty for a dd that has way more power. i also have a 96 p-pumped cummins donor truck. so i have been thinking about tweaking the fuel on the cummins and dropping into the ford. anybody out there that has a similiar setup that can comment on the amount of work and if the power gain is worth the effort? btw, i would be using a complete fordcummins(dsc) kit. thanks scott

if I had a donor cummins truck i would do it tomorrow. I love the old body ford trucks but there motors are a little low on the power side. Everything i have read says it is not that hard of a swap. There are basically no electronics. They sell kits every day so it is a bolt in and plug and play setup. the 12v cummins is such a buildable motor unlike the IDI that is why i would do.

Don't get me wrong I've thought of doing the 12v Cummin's swap. My problem is my engine is running strong at 380k, rebuilt at 200k. And she's never not done something I needer her to, granted some tow's up steep grades took longer than I would have liked, she's never let me down. 8k trailer, like 30+ pulling people stuck out, and one very satisfying drag of a 1500 dodge douche bag.

I have seen first hand of how difficult it can be the cummins is longer so you have to push the trans back then the firewall becomes an issue you can beat it back which will give enough clearance for it to be in but not enough to take off the valve cover if needed so it will need a 3 inch body lift and since you moved the trans back it needs new drive shafts personally to me if you want a cummins stick with the dodge but if you really want to put the time effort and $$$$ into it that's your choice not trying to be an a$$ but that's just my .02

Minimal power gains from a stock 7.3 IDI to a p-pumped 12V?
I see this all the time. Have you ever been in a p-pumped 12V Dodge and driven it, then jumped back into your IDI? How about an obvious difference?
The Powerstroke guys say the same thing when comparing their 7.3L to a 24V. My wife had a 24V Dodge and it hauled like a raped ape compared to our 7.3L PSD. That being said, the Ford is MUCH more comfortable. Knowing the 7.3L PSD was a very reliable motor, the superior comfort and it seems like everyone with a Dodge in this area wails the absolute **** out of them, sold us on the Ford.
Don't get me wrong, I like the IDI motor. Mine has oil blow-by and still runs strong. That being said, if I run across a well loved 12V motor, p-pumped or not, at the right price, I'm on it.

Opinions are like a**holes.
If you want to put a Cummins in your truck then just do it, your truck, your money, your time.
Is the swap worth it? In my opinion yes.
I have been in both IDI's PSD's and Cummins diesel trucks, and the Cummins by far had more ***** for being STOCK, but the in cab noise about drove me crazy, and the ride sucked, felt every rock on the road, and for those reasons I won't be buying a Dodge.
