Wire Loom on lines?

OK, I've been wanting to ask this for a while now, so here goes... You know the black plastic wrap on the fuel lines and HP Oil Lines.. I've always called it wire loom, cause I've only seen it on wiring till now... Does it serve any purpose on there? Other than to catch dirt and grime?? I'd like to do away with it if it won't cause problems.

lol kinda funny, i was thinking the same thing yesterday as i was reinstalling my FPR and changing out the busted fuel return lines. only thing i can think of is it protects the hoses from possibly rubbing each other and creating leaks.

Just thought of something. Maybe they put that stuff on there in case of a leak.. Would help contain the fluid instead of letting it spray all over the place?

Only thing I can thinkn of is it keeps things from rubbing together as much so if you are workin on your truck and see wear on the wire loom you can try and fix the rub problem or replace wire loom
