2001 f350 7.3 shifting problems

It shifts into drive reverse etc fine. But it will not shift out of 1st gear. When you accelerate from a stop it wont shift into second, even at 3000 rpms it stays in first, almost like the torque converter is locked. The only way it shifts from first to second is if you let off the gas wait about two seconds, you can feel the shift but it sort-of lugs in, it doesnt slam in, just really slow almost like a stick shift. All the gears after first shift fine like nothing is wrong. Only first is having problems

There are quite a few usually a 2001 with a 1-2 shifting issue is linked to the failure of the mechanical diode, could be other things, did you get the O/D light blinking? That would be a code...

I hate to hear it, if his intention is to keep it for a long time invest in a BTS or JW and don't worry about it again.

Its our work truck... so he wont spend the extra money on it. But we took it in today, dropped the pan and it was full of shrapnel, the magnet was covered in fine metal shavings and there was a few decent sized chunks of gears, and the filter was pretty much clogged with it too. we changed the fluid and put in a new filter... gonna make it last as long as possible, but it needs a rebuild

Waste of good fluid and filter. That trans is toast. My bet is it will work well till it is in the most inconvenient spot and BOOM! Every trans breakdown I ever had has been that way. Always in the worst spot possible.

What is that truck worth to you? You are going to have to rebuild the trans and get a new cooler. Might as well get a 6.0 cooler while you are at it. If you want to keep this truck forever, get a BTS. If you are going to sell it, get a Ford reman and not the HD version.

my 2001 just did the same thing 3 weeks ago. It was diagnosis the the secondary clutch is gone, its like a valve is sticking or something it still drives and im just gunna run it till it dies then off to BTS for a new trans. When i pulled the pan magnet had normal fine grit not chunks or anything. Mine acted up at 209,000 miles and towed all its life, how many miles do you have on yours?
