slope setting on sony HU

i have a new sony that has the rca outputs for front, rear and subwoofer. i set the LPF and HPF HZ but there are also LPF and HPF slope settings, 1-3. i called sony and they said the unit is so new they arent really 100% sure on these settings. im thinking there like cross overs. ive messed with them some and they do makke a difference, infact at one point they seem to make the sound clearer but also canceled some of the base to the subwoofers out. is any one familiar with these settings. i have my HPF set at 120hz and LPF at 80hz, now for the slopes.
