Top Dead Center on a 400

I don't trust that I have my distributor set right. Here's what I did:

I set #1 Piston as close to the deck as I could get and then set the dampers timing pointer to 0. Then I positioned the distributor to have the rotor pointing at the #1 point in it's original position (#1 is located at 1 o'clock). The vacuum points forward just like the original install as well.

The distributor seated successfully, but I'm wondering if I should have set the damper to something other than 0. This is all new to me so any help is appreciated.
