Glove Box Switch Kills Accessories?

I was eating lunch in my truck today, with the key turned to the accessory position so I could listen to the radio. I reached over and opened the glove box to get a napkin, and the radio died. I had to close the glove box and cycle the key to get the radio to come on again.

Is this normal behavior? I know that if I turn the key off, the radio will continue to play until I open one of the doors, but that seems unrelated to this. In this case I never turned the key off.

Yes it's normal as the glove box lamp is on the same circuit as the courtesy lamps as part of the battery charge protectection and when you open the glove box the GEM sees it as a door switch and acts accordingly!

I don't see how that could be normal. With the key in the accessory position, nothing should turn off the accessories.

The glove box light is powered off of the battery saver relay, as are the vanity mirror lights, overhead console lights and map lights. The courtesy lights are powered through the courtesy light relay, which is in itself powered by the battery saver relay.

The courtesy lights, and the accessory delay relay control are controlled by the door switches. There is a switch in the glove box light but it is a local switch only powering only the glove box light itself.

I can't say exactly what could be wrong that would cause what is happening.

His 02, and yours, are the same as my 04, and every other Ford ever built. Turn the key back one position to the accessory position. Attached below is the page from the 2002 Owner's Manual.

As well, there is no indication from the wiring diagrams I posted that the glove box switch does anything more than ground the glove box light so it can turn on.

BTW, your truck does not have a GEM module.

I understand what your showing and saying, I'm just telling you how my 02 works, you can point at the diagram all night that's not going to make my truck start functioning any differently, and what do you wish to call the GEM in my truck then? Suggestions?

My work truck is an 03. My personal truck is an 00. I have had an 03,an 04, an 05, an 06, and 07 for work. The key switch worked the same in all of them as Dchamberlain described. The radio would not cutoff if turned back to ACC on the 03 and up. The radio will turn off if key is off and door opened. None of them had a glove box light that i remember so i cannot answer the OP question though.

My 07 has a distinct accy position my e 99 had a distinct accy position every 00 01 02 I've worked on has had the position physically on the switch however it has functioned as a off position all have been PSD trucks as that's what our fleet consisted of however my own and friends trucks have operated in this manner as well, ^so much ^so that I have complained to service liason's on multiple documented occasions as we maintained warranty station status through our American La-France dealership! This issue has bugged me since it's inception!
