It looks like the tach sensor wires in the pic but I can't tell for sure if they're running into the tack sensor in the pic cause the view is partially blocked by the vacuum pump. Does your truck have a tach and if so is it working?

May be why it's not hooked up then. Is it capped off or is the plug open? Is there a tach sensor mounted in the top of the IP gear housing? In the pic its the big nut just behind and to the right of the oil fill.

IIRR the non tach trucks have all the wiring for a tach. What you are describing sounds like the tach plug in.

Its the tach plug in, and farmert, not all the non-tach trucks have the wiring for a tach, my 84 doesnt have it, nor does it have the port....

ya my cover has the plugged hole for the sensor, the truck has a remanufactured engine in it from a place in minnesota, so maybe they put the harness in that was with the engine originally, got this truck from the original owner! pretty dang clean, only one little rust hole by the tailpipe, and i never seen such a clean IDI engine no oil no where outside it on the top anyhow. when i pick it up i will get some pics to post, sunday.

Theres not too many Diesel rebuilders around here, they are (from what I have heard) some of the best remans out there, Id take them over a jasper. Dealers Diesel actually supplied the local Ford stealer with engines, there is still a 3-ring binder there. They changed their name to Riviva a few years ago.
Heres their website
