Got an paint job estimate for my 51 F7!!
Hi guys,
Finally the restoration on my 51 F7 is almost done. I decided to get a couple of estimates. One from a guy I went to high school with and happens to own a big body shop. He came out looked at my truck and said it would be 10-12 grand to paint it. Way too much in my opinion. Another estimate was from a shop that repairs our fire department vehicles when they are damaged. They repaired my rescue truck when it was hit 6 months ago and they did a good job.
He said to bring it to him sanded to 320 grit paper. He would then spray a sealer and have his guys sand it to 600 grit paper. He would then spay it with a base coat/ clear coat paint for $1800!! I almost dropped the phone when he gave me the price. I hope to have the truck to his shop in a few weeks .... I will post pics of the completed paint job.

Thanks guys. He said he buys the paint in bulk so it keeps his costs down. Its a two tone typical black over red chicago color. The black I want to use is the blue/black they used in the fifties. The truck originally had gold leafing on it but with the price of gold now it will be expensive. I asked about synthetic gold lettering after the base coat is layed, followed up with a clear coat. He recommended not doing it in case the decals started peeling up messing up the clear coat. Whats your thoughts??

I find it hard to believe that this guy can buy that much base coat and clear and apply it for that kind of money though, most any quality base coat will run $100 a quart (retail) and the clear (UFC35) sells for $200 a gallon...then you add catalyst and reducer, the costs add up quick. Good luck with your project, I hope it all works out well.

He's in Miami. He said he gets the red for $50 a gallon + the catalyst and reducer. I am not sure what brand of paint he is using. The truck will not see a lot of use and will be stored indoors so the paint should hold up. I will definately post some pictures of the job when its done. I also offered to display his business sign next to the truck at shows.

The cost of paint is more dpendant on locale versus brand. I can go 50 miles away and pick up a gallon of PPG in any original Ford color for $120, plus the reducer, and activator, and I wouldn't spend $225. I can purchase a gallon of House of Kolor in a mild custom color for $200 a gallon. Clear, in either brand can be had for $100-$150 a gallon. My area doesn't have sales tax, so that is helpful too.
