2000 F150 4x4 5.4 4R70w Transmission No Reverse

I pulled a buddy's Jeep out of a hole in reverse and I felt a minor clunk in the drivetrain but everything seemed to be normal. A couple of days later under normal acceleration I felt it again as it shifted between 1st and second but again everything else seemed normal.I worked the rest of the day made several trips to the store with no problems and then when I was driving home all of a sudden the engine revs up and I'm not going any where, blip the peddle and the trany engages and stays in gear. I pull into a NAPA store to check fluid and its fine so I go to back up and no reverse, after getting a push out of the parking place I drive down the road and now it won't shift out of first unless I take my foot of the gas and then it feels like it goes into 3rd and then it dropps out of gear unless I rev it way up and then it bangs into gear for a minute and then when it shifts to OD.... nothing. I still have no reverse so I'm afraid the tranny is gone....Any help would be appreciated....Also if the tranny is gone do I have to pull transfer case to pull transmission?

Is the OD light flashing on the shifter?
Check for transmission fault codes.
Inspect the DTR position sensor on the side of the transmission, for damage.
You need to get a handle on the issue before considering a removal.
If service is required, the whole unit comes out.
Good luck.

This is a common problem with this trans, what has happened is the weld that holds the sun gear to the reaction shell has broken. When this happens you loose 2nd, 4th and reverse.

The trans will have to be removed and disassembled to fix and the transfer case will have to come off first.

2000 Ford E250 4x4 Conversion

I have a 2000 Ford E250, with a newly rebuilt 4.2L V6. I am looking to convert this to a 4x4...It has a 4R70W trans, that needs an output shaft bushing. I decided I might convert to 4x4, since the trans should be rebuilt. Anyone have any input on choice of transfer case and trans, that will bolt up to this pattern? Thanks!

You really should post in the E-van forum, and start a NEW thread there.

Go back to the main forum page here: Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - Ford truck and SUV owners and enthusiasts Community And Information Source.

Scroll down below the Bronco area to OTHER FORDS, then the second heading under that title is 1968 - PRESENT FULL SIZE VANS, which is here: 1968 - Present Full Size Vans - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

That will put you in the community of E-van owners.
