7.3 IDI lacking power etc.

Hi Guys

My '93 F350 crew cab with above engine and E40D xmission seems to be getting tired. I have about 360k kms on it and to my knowledge no extensive work to the engine, but I hear they should go for a while yet.
Basically power seems pretty lacking, especially when in 4wd, it's really poor. I am wondering about possible injector issues, but oil consumption is high as well, around a litre for every 2 or 3 hrs of highway driving - maybe more, but no smoking really so maybe its leaking like a sieve.. Any suggestions kindly appreciated.

Power problems. Check injectors, injectors pump, fuel filter,

Oil If you don't see it on the ground its going through the engine. You should do a compression check. Might be valves might be rings.

Does it have a turbo. If it's slobbering oil into the exhaust because its going bad that could cause both problems

I personally would do a compression test first, and go from there.

An oil leak like that would be pretty noticeable.

Thanks, I guess a compression check is in order, it is a turbo.

Have you checked your turbo, if the seal is out they can use a tremendous amount of oil, and if it is bad you will lose a lot of power.

Thats sounds like a lead to follow, do you know how involved it would be to remove and inspect the seal??

If it still has the original injector pump and injectors with that many miles on them you can be pretty sure they're due for a change as well. A new IP and injectors will give it alot of new life! I would definitely figure out where that oil is going first though.

So I got my batteries charged up and stuck a new air cleaner in, the previous one didn't have a lot of miles but looked pretty plugged. Anyway, after that and some cranking and standing on the accelerator she started on about the third attempt. Since then has been starting no problem , thanks for the input..

I would also clean/check the CDR valve, if it hasn't been cleaned, it could be causing some of your oil consumption issues too.

I cleaned the CDR and think there may have been some air leak issues. Unfortunately the connecting grommet on top of the valve cover cracked when I took it off and no one seemed to be able to help with a replacement so I used some silicone type cement and hopefully that works, will see how oil consumption goes from here.

Just wondering, I am not sure of the past history on my truck, I purchased it with 350k kliks or so and was told that the engine had been reworked (whatever that means) at some time previous. Anyways, the turbo may have been overhauled, if not would you know how involved and which seals to look at replacing?

You can usually see where oil is running from your turbo to the intake, and you can remove it and check the condition of the fins and make sure they are not rubbing the housing.

Thx, I am fairly sure the fins are not rubbing the housing, I've heard that noise before and it's noticeable to say the least. So maybe a problem with electrics or waste gate, most likely beyond my ability to trouble shoot. All I know is the power is lacking and its using oil but starting good again??
