Your '87 should have a mechanical cable driving the speedo. Start by disconnecting the cable from the transmission (transfer case if it's 4x4), and see the the plastic gear on the end of the cable is intact...

the gear appears to be ok, nothing is broke

Spin the gear with your fingers. Make sure the cable is turning with it, and see if the speedo moves. If the cable turns, but the speedo doesn't, (try spining it both ways...), then disconnect the cable from the back of the speedo. Spin it again, and make sure the cable isn't broken inside the sheath...
If the cable is fine, connect it back to the speedo & try it again. If it still doesn't work, your speedo is bad.
