1951 F1 U Joint Question

Hello, planning on a 9inch swap and was wondering if the stock U Joint in the stock driveshaft will fit or if there is a specialty U Joint that I have to buy.

Thanks in advance!

It's going to depend on the yoke you have on your 9" pinion. But also know the 9" axle is larger than the original Dana, and you will very likely need to shorten your drive shaft by about an inch/inch and a half. You can get a new, matching u-joint when you have the shaft shortened. You will need to instal the new axle to get the exact measurement needed. This is not a place for guesswork.

Usually you use a hydrid U-joint that is commonly available, that has the stock cups on one pair of the cross, and ones to match the 9" on the other two. There is a stock Spicer number for the joints but I don't have it.

Ask, and ye shall receive.

C5TZ-4635-F .. U-Joint-2 cups are 1310's, 2 cups are 1330's / Spicer number: 210392-X

This may be a commonly stocked U-joint, but you'd prolly be amazed on how many times I've typed this same info (over 100 times).

Peeps go to chain autoparts stores to get one or more (don't take the old one along...if they have it). So, they describe it.

The dumb counter clucks look at them as if they just landed from outer space, because they haven't a clue such a U-joint exists.

As Wayne said, install it to see what you need exactly.

The 9" I used from a 65 truck took the same ujoint as the original. No hybrid was needed.

Also the 9" carrier was shorter than the Dana 41 so I had to find a slip yoke that made the driveshaft 1.5" LONGER.

9" rear axle u-joints. It all depends on the applications.

F100/F150's w/a 2 piece driveshaft use 3 of the hybrids (1310/1330), but if not a 2 piece drive shaft, all 4 cups are 'usually' the same (1310).

The Dana 44 also uses 1310 size u-joints and these are the same u-joints used in myriad 1957/79 Passenger Cars with 8" (1962/80) & 9" (1957/80) rear axles, 1957 and later F100/150's, Bronco's and Econolines.

Some of these 1310 u-joints are specific to front or rear, some are not...because it depends on the applications.

A member here (Kevin something or other) with a 1951 F6 needed u-joints, the parts catalog he was using had the old ancient basic number of 7039. No one had any because Ford changed the number to 4635 in 1956.

The 'new' part number was B6TZ-4635-A, that was replaced in 1963 with C3AZ-4635-J same-o same-o as 1960/70's Passenger Cars.

Yep, the stock driveshaft will be too short...
