I de-rusted the window regulators and the springs broke. I was thinking there has got to be another one from the junk yards that would work in a 1948 door.

Volkswagon bug? etc. Anyone come up with anything that will work?

 

Have you got a picture of the spring? I assume it's one of those wound flat springs?

You could do an Advanced Search on here for JuliesCoolF-1;s posts, I believe "she" did a picture thread on latches and regulators.

 

It's not flat and I don't have pic of it but the ends broke off on both of them. Evidently they were cracked or something. Also the vinegar ate one of the posts off that the handle goes on. So I am really looking for something else that will fit. I looked at the volkswagon one and it may work not sure.

AFAIK, Ford did not sell the springs by themselves, so there is no part number.

 

I have 3 one from LMC one from Classic haulers and one from Mac's I cannot afford to order anything at this point in time.

 

If I find a regulator that will work I will let everyone know. I can't afford $75 for each when I can get something from the junkyard for 8.00

 

Being over 60 years old gives me the advantage of having been there and done that. Work and cheap will not equal quality repair at a low cost. I have the equipment and ability to build almost any mechanical part. Several times in my life I have tried to be frugal and re engineer a part to work like the original. I have managed to get the new improved version to work well many times. In EVERY case I would have been cheaper off to get a part time job at minimum wage selling pencils - if you consider your time. If you can't afford to fix it now wait or make do till you can afford the correct part.

The only other option that I can think of would be to look at craigslist.The large 48-52 trucks(same cab) could have a good used regular that someone may sell you. I see them frequently being parted out. chuck

 

It's not that I am trying to be frugal, I am 57 years old not a dumb person and I am not working, I don't have money to go get, I am raising my grandson and can't work atm. So I was just ASKING if there was another regulator that would work.

I guess I will just stop posting.

 

The same regulator fits all 1948/52 trucks, but nothing else is the same from any vehicle.

You're going to be wasting time, labor and money driving around visiting myriad junkyards, taking door panels apart to see if a regulator from another vehicle will work. There isn't one, so don't bother looking.

IMO, if you cannot afford to pay $75.00 for a new regulator, you cannot afford an old vehicle...all of which are money pits.

I'm 10 years older than you are, owned 337 vehicles since 1956, have years of experience working on them and stacks of reference material, so I 'know the score.'

 

NtShade, I have not heard of any, most of the guys here aren't into the rat rod style of these trucks, I would try HAMB (link attached) for that kind of question. Hope you don't give up on us here on FTE it's just a different kind of a site... Please let me know what you use. at one time I thought of using a Lancer's power window assembly to make it power as they use plastic cables which don't last in AZ that well so I didn't look into it any more...

It isn't that we don't sympathize, there just hasn't been anyone who has not used stock (or the power option). You should find something and make it work, and post it up for us.

But I think NumberDummy is right, restoration is not cheap.

 

I'm with ya! Don't get frustrated yet, there's bound to be something that will work. I'm a huge fan of finding something that will work. While I can appreciate the point Marty was trying to make I am also of the belief that not all of us can afford to drop a handful of cash everytime a part breaks. And sometimes the repop parts aren't worth a darn or are a cheap import.

Everything in this world is some sort of trade off, If you don't mind investing the time then I say go for it.
Some people can afford to write checks, some people can afford to invest man hours, and then there are the lucky few who have an excess of both money and time.

I would bet that there would be several regulators that would probably work, might have to fiddle with mounting points but there's bound to be something out there.
