I too tow heavy and I applaud your review of our engine brake You are spot on. With heavy loads it is a dismal failure. I have posted similar results in my towing experience and received correction from many that I didn't know how to use it or I was going too fast or whatever. Truck is rated to tow GCW of 30k. Stopping 30k needs to be factored into that rating. This is a serious flaw and an obvious over-sight on an other-wise great truck. Hope Ford is listening.....

I know it is not the same, but the trucks I drive are over 70 K, with both Telma retarders and Jake Brakes. They will assit braking down to about 10 MPH. Jakes are user seletable between high, low and off. The Telma's off and on only.
I'm not making any comparisons between our light duty trucks and Heavy Duty trucks capable of 70k. Jake Brakes and the other products available on those trucks are in another league. My comments are totally limited to using Light Duty pickups in their OEM dress or the 2000-2007 engines with PAC or B&D Exhaust brakes.

The trailers I pull with my SRW truck max out at 16,000bs. And most are around 13,000 lbs. And I understand that if you are towing 19,000lbs you have the same exhaust braking that I have towing 13,000 and that may not be enough for your load.

Neither am I, just an observation. Stopping 30K should be easier then 70-78K.

Agree, 6K more is substantial. And the truck is rated to tow 22.5K

I'd have to really lighten up the truck to tow that though. When I weighed in at 19K the total was just under the max GCWR.
Tool box, tools aluminun roll cover, firewood and stuff - I don't know how an F350 DRW could tow a 22.5 trailer. The truck would have to weigh 7500 pounds - which it doesn't

The transmission downshifts on it's own every time without being in T/H when the cruise is ON. The first time it did this I didn't even know it until I got to the bottom and it upshifted. I since have noticed it does it every time at the same place. I have no idea if it does this when towing, as I set up for the downgrades well in advance(T/H engaged, speed reduced, brake pedal tapped). Of course my engine is different than you guys, just a puny 300 HP.
I'll second this. While driving down a hill with the cruise on and NOT in T/H I decided that I was going faster than desired. I clicked the - button on the cruise control a few times and the engine downshifted from 6th to 4th and slowed me right now. I'm not sure if it was using the engine brake or just normal engine compression but it sure slowed the truck down in a hurry.

Not when the vehicle with 70-78k has 20 times the braking potential of the the 30k vehicle!
