Even if it gets 10 that will be cheaper in the long run from the 14 i am getting with my PSD. I like my truck the cost just out weigh the likeness. Oil changes will save me 100 bucks every 7500 miles. and 200 every 15k miles. Just all depends on what you want and what to expect i reckon.

I average 12-13MPG with mixed driving, city and highway. I hear the tuners do work wonders. I bought a Ford extended warranty with my truck, so I'm waiting to get a tuner. Dont think the V10 is gonna pull like your diesel, cause it wont. But it also wont stink, be noisy or cost a ton in maintenance. The diesel fuel costs & extra gas mileage just about = out with the V10 gas mileage from what I hear. Meaning, more expensive fuel + more MPG = less expensive fuel at a higher MPG. For me the extra 1 MPG less of the V10 over the 5.4 were worth it for the extra HP.

Depends on the year and configuration. The long bed trucks come with 38 gallon tanks and the short bed trucks come with a 29 gallon tank. (For 99'-04' trucks anyway, I think the 05'-10' trucks are the same)

Empty with mostly back roads and very little highway I can get 300 miles out of the 29 gallon tank on my 04' and still have around 5 gallons left in the tank.

i have read on the v10 in town is line 10 mpg and towing is like 6...have i read wrong.
I never got below 9mpg with my truck on the road and towing. Worst fuel mileage I ever got was in the winter driving mountain roads for a couple hours in 4X4 pushing snow. Around town you can expect 9-11 depending how you drive. Towing mpg will vary depending on what you tow. Expect a V10 F53 chassis motorhome grossing over 20k lbs to get 6-7 mpg. The trucks are not as fuel hungry as some people make them out to be.

For the OP I think a V10 truck will suit him very well. I'd bet money if you look around you can find some V10 trucks that are like new yet. A 2011 leftover 6.2l truck would work well also.

My truck came with a 30.5 gal. tank. So at 13 MPG it's range is about 380 miles. That's also what the lieometer says when she's full. When I pull my trailer (7x16 enclosed), it never goes below 11 MPG on the highway. Granted it's a somewhat light trailer even when loaded maybe 5k?

No, the 05+ trucks are the same. My '07 SC short bed has the 29 gallon tank.

I bought my V10 early this year and I love it. Gas mileage doesn't concern me. A tank of gas lasts me 3 weeks almost to the day under my routine driving conditions. My old 3/4 ton Chevy with a 350 and manual trans got 10 MPG pulling my 34' travel trailer, and my V10 gets the same with more power and more room. Also, I sometimes get called into work after hours which requires me to get there quickly, and its only maybe a mile away. So a lot of short trips with little engine warm up time. Even with -40°f temps, she fires up without the assistance of an extension cord. (Another extra cost of diesel). I know a diesel would have a ton more power, but personally I just don't need it. I've pulled heavier loads with less powerful trucks and they all made it just the same. Plus I'm still not sold on the fuel mileage argument. Everyone around this website claims higher numbers than most people I know personally, and others that I've spoken with. For instance, my brother in-law says his 7.3 gets 14 at the best on highway empty. Also a friend admitted to only 7mpg with his 6.0 pulling a travel trailer smaller and lighter than mine. I could give many more examples of the same figures. I'm not saying everyone is getting poor mileage with their powerstrokes, just most of the people I have talked with. Call me a liar if you choose, I don't care.

I am just surprised you are getting that low of fuel mileage with a 6.0.

MPG 6.0 verus 6.8

Real Numbers
My 6.0 would average 14-15 MPG per tank. Towing depending on wind drag I would get 9-10.
Stock

My 6.8 does average 11-12 MPG per tank. I tow slower now but I get 8 per tank. My tank size is 38 gallons so my range is 308 miles.

What I DO miss about the diesel is the sound and pulling power over at altitude.

What I don't miss is the maintains and breaking down on the road with tow.

I read that new trucks are getting 20+ MPG configured as a 4x4, crew cab, long bed auto. Those are numbers people where telling me when I purchased my 05 diesel. If a dealer would LET me drive one for a week and if got that millage I would buy one.

I love my V10 but if you buy one don't look at the milliege. I read today that some person was getting 17 MPG out of a V10. I don't think it is possible.

I did get high 16s once, in the middle of the summer, no wind, temperatures in the low 80s, stock tires on my old excursion... 17s I imagine would be possible in a reg cab 2wd v10 truck with a manual, in the same conditions.... but really, how often does that happen?

The X got 15mpg average on the hwy, and 12 around town. The new truck seems to be more like 12/14 - kind of odd considering how much lighter the reg cab is vs the loaded excursion - but that may be because of my foot being in it more often. The thing just flat out flies compared to the X.

It does matter a lot how you drive the thing though, and from test driving about 8-9 v10's so far (all over 100k miles, some over 200k, and one over 300k), they're not all equal, some are more equal than others.

Also, remote start does chew up quite a bit of gas in the winter... but it feels nice to get into a warm truck

Every time I look at trucks, I get the diesel bug, and then I start reading about all of the problems and whatnot, i remember where I live (cold winters) and end up going back to the mod motors... Maybe when I'll live in a warmer climate where I won't depend on the truck in the winter, or if I tow more often, I'll get one... until then, the gassers work out ok.

Thats around what the people I know with 6.0ls were getting as far as mpg.

You can't beat forced induction for higher altitudes and low end torque. There is going to be some tradeoff going to a V10 truck over the PSD. Anyone looking to make the switch just has to know the pros and cons and decide for themselves. Either way get them while you can, within the next 10 years I forsee that a LOT of changes are going to be made which many will probably not like.

The 6.7l seems to be getting some awsome mpg but Ford made a lot of changes to get mpg out of it.(highway gears, TQ which stays locked at lower rpms, DEF and etc) I just don't know how everything is going to hold up over the long haul.

On a long stretch of flat highway at about 55mph I could see an empty V10 truck making 17mpg especially in thinner air. I never saw it though and never will I reckon.

Lol that's hilarious. When u hear of that happening let me know where that truck is or where it is located so I can buy it or move there lol

I've made 15mpg with my truck on a trip when it was stock babying it due to very foggy conditions. Thinner air requires less fuel to maintain the a/f ratio. Under the right conditions IMO 17mpg is possible. Its just not something you cannot expect to achieve on a regular basis.

If I drive mine 62 mph I can get 15.5 mpg with my v10 with 4.10 gears.
However I refuse to drive that slow and its a real test of patience- it was more of an experiment.

these 2008 v10s seem to be very sensitive to throttle input- if its a steady throttle i can get good mileage, if its stop and go the mileage craps out at an alarming rate!

get a v10- i had a diesel and this thing is really really quiet and smooth with decent enough power. and the cost of maintenance is so low- you probably forgot like I did an oil change should cost you 20 bucks instead of 100 to 150 with filters like the diesel. hell even from ford dealer i paid 29 dollars last week for an oil change. the tech was surprised at the smile on my face.
