'97 timing gears and chain

I did a search and couldn't find any info on this so if its a repete, please forgive me!

Will a pre '72 timing set work with a '97 fuel injected 460 in a F250? I'm fixing a leak in the timing chain cover and the chain seemed quite loose. The parts house did not have any timing set so I had them order one for a early 429. I hope I didn't pull a bone head

I found out the hard way, 429 gears will not work on a '97 460, if any one wanted to know.

Unless the NAPA store got me the wrong timing set, both gears in the new set were smaller. The old crank gear was about an inch larger in diameter than the new one, and the hole for the shaft was about an inch bigger also. The hole in the cam gear looked like it was the same. There is a dingus that goes on the crank that the timing gear fits over and looks like it is to ballance the crank. I assume the older 460's and 429's did not have this? Internal VS external ballance?
