I ordered all of my parts; thermostat, thermostat gasket, and dual alternator hose.
But then I got a message from the Ford parts dept and they said that the gasket is discontinued and the seal for the thermostat is a part of the thermostat.
"This part is no longer available; I believe many people do not use this seal. The seal for the thermostat is part of the stat."
Yes that is correct. I also used make a gasket in a can and put a bead along the top where the housing sits.
I want to do everything on the coolant system that might be needing done.
So far I have these on my list:
Coolant
Coolant Filter
Dual Alternator Radiator Hose
Thermostat
<strike>Thermostat Gasket</strike> (Discontinued. Use an RTV gasket)
Anything else I am missing? Should I get a thermostat housing?
I ordered a new thermostat from Ford, but then I saw a 203* thermostat on Dieselsite.com. Does anyone have anything to say on this different thermostat?
If it were me I would get the t-stat housing from dieselsite also. You won't have to worry about it ever rusting again. I stayed with the 193/195 t-stat.
A cooler running engine is better in my mind even though international says our engines run better with a 203 stat. Alot of people on here stayed with the 193/195
I would call your local parts store and make sure they have a NEW waterpump in stock(stay away from remanned) The tstat bolt and waterpump like to corrode themselves together without antiseize. Expect to have broken or stripped bolts when taking the tstat off, therefore having the replace the waterpump.
6 gallons of distilled water.
air hammer with chisel attachment to take the fan off. way easier than fan wrenches
