Post Best muffler for ford 1959 f-100?

Hello, this is my first post and i would like some advice on the type of muffler i should install on my 1959 f-100.
I picked a the truck up about 3 weeks ago and am fixing it up and i would like to replace is the muffler that it has. the muffler it currently has does not have a name on it or a model number but i know its not the default cause the guy i bought the truck from said that he replaced the muffler with one from the junk yard when the original rusted out. I currently have a Thrush glasspack laying around but i am not sure if i should install it. i want a low rumbly sound at idle and a loud, powerful sound during acceleration. I know that the glasspack will produce this sound at first, but i have heard that as time goes on the fiberglass insulation burns out and it sounds like a ricer. ( honda civic ). any ideas what it will sound like when the glasspack reaches the end of its life? Thanks for reading all of this

First off...welcome. I didn't catch your name. Glad you found your way on here.

I love glasspacks...especially when they start to wear out. They get a rattier sound (if that is a word) in my opinion. I like the steel packs a little more...but that's just me.

You can go real crazy and get a chambered muffler but people tend to love em or hate em. I love em, thus the dual Flowmasters on my truck.

A lot of people use em on flatheads...I heard a few with Y-blocks and I liked it. Eh...each to their own I suppose.

Youtube em and see what you think.

Another muffler I really like for that low rumble sound is Mellowtones.

A question for Billy. What engine are you running? That will make a big difference in what sound you get. I have a 58 with the 292 Y-Block. I added Patriot long tube headers with Cherry Bomb mufflers topped off with 4' tailpipes and turn downs just before the rear axle. I like the sound of it. It has that low rumble at idle and the power sound under throttle.

im running cherry bomb glass packs on my 64 f250. I like the way it sounds. Ive always loved glass packs especially on an old beat up ford truck that when you stand on it and let of it cackles and pops. May sound trashy to other people but what can i say im a hillbilly.

I think 49Fordman is right .Brockman Mellowtones,in either a glass or steel pack sound great, especially with a Y-block.But my wife/daughter didn't care much for the volume, and they prevailed.I'm whipped.

Change your engine to a V8.

Short of that, put on the glasspack you have and call it a day.

Welcome to FTE.

My 52 F1 originally had a 216 straight 6 with glass packed mufflers and sounded great, but now it has a 289 V8....sounds better

These guys Clifford Performance :: Make 6 = 8 talk about making your six sound like an 8. Their headers are in my "someday" plan for my '60 F100 223.

Inline 6 sounds best to me with a stock quiet muffler ,unless you put headers on . Then i like straight though glass pack, they sound as good if not better than a V-8 . If Y-block,then you can't beat long straight though glass pack. But that's just me,everybody for their own. JIM
