It amazes me that you don't have to take a safety course to drive something that long down the road. RVs/trailers, boats, guns, and babies.......you should be required to pass a course first.

I agree. My insurance co asked me about my towing experiance when I called to insured my 5'r. Once I Told her that I have a class A CDL, she stopped asking questions...makes me wonder if I got a discount, or at least a cheaper rate than someone with no towing experiance.
It Also makes me think that they must have quite a few claims like the one pictured above to even ask about my experiance.
I just noticed that thats an Open Range 5'r....pricey unit.
I'm not even sure how you would fix that! It looks like a tow truck isn't an option, so you would have to put all the running gear back where it belongs right where it sits. But that might involve welding right next to a gas pump... It would be interesting to know how that story turned out.
I personally do not think a course is the answer. I could take the course but never practice driving with this type of load. I lived and worked a big farm for 30 years. I drove everything from 18 wheeler down to a riding lawnmower Never had to have a CDL, Class A or any other "special licenses" on the hiway. My experience is worth a whole lot more than some course and I use "course" loosely.
I do agree that there needs to be something to bring back into line these big long RVs. I may be interested in some type of "tick" on your drivers licenses that shows or allows you to pull or drive an RV. In all of my travels, the "inexperienced" are the culprits. A lot of people blame age, that just is not true in my book. These people that "rent and rv" and then take off for a 2 week family trip, to me, is just asking for trouble. No experience in driving a larger vehicle, or pulling a something of this weight. I have seen these rental RV's stuck in some pretty precarious places then hear them blaming something or someone, never their fault.
First "lesson" some guy at a gas station gave me(I must have looked like I needed it) on my brand new travel trailer, was to always pull straight ahead until my trailer wheels were at least even with what I wanted to turn around or past. Always worked for me. Guess this other guy didn't hear that one.
We all get to learn lessons, it just costs more for some people.

I have been pretty lucky. I knocked a jack off mine early in it's life when it caught a drop-off. Hit a low hanging branch in a campground because someone had left a car blocking most of the road.
I did the "5th wheel drop" leaving my yard when I did my trailer brake check.
I learned some of the 5th wheel quirks pretty early and definately prefer them to tag alongs.

I did that rub back in Apr. except it was the pole for the water. I was mightly pissed about it. Just took a little paint so I got some of the same color and fixed it right up.
a test will do noting to help there is a drivers test that people take to drive a car and there bad driver but pass the test. experience is the way, i have driven a school bus and wide loads and that is what helps you learn.

So true!
The test, if you can call it one, is when you get in the truck and drive and have the "common sense" to watch your mirrors, watch your load, and have the ability to stop and say to yourself, "I cannot fit in there" or "how will I get out of there" or "oh s***".
