exhaust sound 5.4L v8
what do you think is the best sounding, and tolerable exhaust for a 5.4L 2v motor f250?
i use the truck for highway towing, so i dont want something thats going to be really loud and annoying on long trips, and i want something thats not going to rot out in a year.
any suggestions?

I would put on an SPD y-pipe (if you have an 00'-04') and a Flowmaster 50SUV muffler. The 50 SUV muffler will increase sound but has enough capacity to keep drone down. The 70 Big Block 2 is what I have on my 04' 6.8l and it is a little louder than stock but is not harsh because it is a large capacity and meant for vehicles that tow. I do not care for any of the smaller capacity flowmaster mufflers, especially the 4" case ones.
Downside to the flowmasters is most of them are made of aluminized steel although flowmaster is starting to make stainless mufflers. Also IMO they are overpriced for what they are but I like the sound and performance of the larger mufflers so I pay the price. If you brush off the rust and paint the muffler with some ceramic header paint once a year they will last long. Mine has been on my truck for around 3 years now and the 40 series I put on my sisters truck lasted over 7 years before she got rid of it. I live in PA so the mufflers get exposed to all the crap that goes along with winters in the rust belt.

Flowmasters are cheap! The exhaust I had on my Honda years ago was over $2000, and it increased hp by about 10. I am amazed at how relatively cheap it is to get power increases for domestic performance cars versus the imports. This is one of the reasons I got away from that scene. That and I grew up and generally hate the mindset of the import people.

Bear River Converters - Wholesale distributors of catalytic converters
Bear River has my vote. Thier Wicked Flow muffler is stainless, lifetime warranty and sounds wicked awesome...properly sized its not too loud, nice rumble. Not cheap, IIRC the 22" single in, single out 3" is 129.95 but well worth it.
Get the Wicked Flow MAX.

The FM70 is around the $150 mark and is all aluminized steel, for half that you can buy a stainless (409) Magnaflow 7" x 30" case XL muffler. The FM chambered mufflers are not as expensive as the Hushpower mufflers from FM though.

thanks for all the replies!
and no offence to the gibson people, but i just never had success with one of those systems having any longevity. they sound fantastic but rust out quick, in my experience.
i was looking at a flowmaster kit, but then i had the thought i just taking the muffler out and seein how it sounds.
and since someone up top said id isnt wildly loud i might try it first cause its free.
maybe ill even fab up a custom muffler delete side exit and see how it works out.
probably wont help much with keeping the Annoying down in the truck but will be cheap and easy.
thanks again for the replies!

are the flowmaster 40s painted black? i had a pair on my 5.0HO Lincoln a few years back and they were the sweetest sounding mufflers ever. I also had BBK X pipe and custom bent stainless 2.5" tubing with no cats... I;d buy another, but I think it would be too loud for my truck, even if it was just 1 muffler, with cat. Ive heard the magnaflows on a 2010 250 w/ duals and it sounded weird, very muffled. I didnt like that sound.
