4.30 or 4.56 gears
Looking to replace my 02 5.4 F250 with a newer model.Brand new just ain't happening. My present truck has 285 tires and 3.73 open diffs.Truck can't get out of its own way.I'm sure the newer 5 spd auto may help if the gearing is better than mine. But how about the 4.30 or 4.56 gearing with the 33" tires.Anybody running these ?

If memory serves me right the 05'-10' SDs with the 5.4l 3V only came with 3.73s or 4.10s and the year the 5.4l 2V 99'-04' SDs came with 3.73s, 4.10s or 4.30s depending on configuration.
With 33" tires 4.30s will do fine. If you would tow heavy all the time 4.56s would be a better choice. Regardless of year if its got a gas engine with 32" or 33" tires the 4.30 gears will work well.

I have an 06 F250 with the V-10. I had 4.10 in it. I used to pull a really heavy trailer with that truck 17-18K every day. I switched to 4.56 and it pulled great and runs good. Gas mileage is in the toilet as you would expect. I still have the truck but do not use it to tow very often any more and not that much weight. I may switch back to 4.10. BTW it has 35" tires on it.

Mine does alot of hunting with the 33's and 3.73's.My 2 other F250's,a 1988 and a 1994 had 4.10's and the 5.8 engine. The 88 with 35's ran OK with 4.10's if I remember. But once you put a roughly 30% OD on 3.73 gearing with bigger tires, performance all the way around will suffer.Plus add the 10% ethanol and it just snowballs downhill.Just started kicking tires as to what I whant to get.But will definitely be doing some changes if I get another 5.4. 4.30 or 4.56 will be first on the list.Seen the 5 star something tuner that looks good.It would be nice not to have to bury your foot in the pedal to maintain a grade with just a snowmobile trailer in tow.
Thanks for the input guys. Ed
PS anybody with any input keep it coming.Has anybody done any serious tweaking to these motors

The gas engined trucks really need all the gear they can get, especially the V-8 trucks.
A stock truck with 3.73's and a 265/75/16 tire turns 1943 RPM @ 70 MPH.
With 4.30's and a 285/75/16 (or 285/70/17) tire the engine spins 2145 RPM @ 70.
With 4.56's and the same taller tire, it bumps it up to 2275 RPM @ 70.
That thing will be so much more fun to drive with the 56's, it will feel like a drag car in comparison.
