Cell Phone Wifi
I have verizon and a smart phone. I have wireless broadband service at home and a wireless router. My laptop will pick up the wireless access but my smart phone will not, now will my girlfriends droid. It will however pick up our neighbors. We recently moved and at our old house it picked up our wifi but once we moved we cant get it to anymore. Im thinking there is some setting we may hit or something. Anyone know where to look?
Im preparing myself for when my contract ends so I dont get charged the extra since I can hook into my wifi at home.

Two things that I can think of
1. Does your home router have security enabled? When you try to connect a computer it asks for a password ( unless you have it set up). I don't know what phones do. (You might have to go into a setup deal).
2. Could you have a 5.x GHz router? I believe that some are rather than the more common 2.4 GHz. This is the basic router frequency. I think that most computers can deal with either, but I'm not sure about phones.
Please be aware that both points are things that I THINK are true.
Good Luck,
hj

There are a few different WiFi security schemes. WEP is very old and insecure, but some routers are still set up that way. The newer schemes are WPA and WPA2. WPA and WPA2 can also do two different kinds of encryption. TKIP is older and AES is newer.
I suspect the problem is you're router is set up with a security scheme that the phone can't do. Probably WEP. Look at the Wireless Security set up in the router and see what it is. Set it to WPA or WPA2 and if possible mixed mode to do both WPA/WPA2. Then if that doesn't work, play around with the encryption. Try switching between TKIP and AES if you can and see what that does.
P.S. 5Ghz WiFi is pretty uncommon still. It's part of the newer 802.11n standard. I've seen a few routers that support it, but very few built-in wireless cards. Most WiFi is still 2.4Ghz.
